Hello everyone,

I’ve been working as an ABA behavioral therapist for the past 8 months along with being a medical scribe. As an ABA therapist, I visit two families on a regular basis and teach their autistic children different communication skills.

I spoke with my mom and she told me it would be best not to include the behavioral therapy position on my AMCAS because it has nothing to do with the medical field and it may even hurt my chances of acceptance since it is more of a position suited for those who are interested in a psychology career.

What are your thoughts on this? Should it be left out or should I mention it?

Have you received Registered Behavior Technician (RBT) training? I'd lean toward including it, if you have been trained. It shows an ability to work with a challenging population and to be engaged with clients and their families in their homes which gives you a viewpoint that many clinicians do not have.

I think you should mention it.

If you are a licensed therapist, this should be included.

No, I am not currently licensed but I am considering receiving an RBT certificate. The training requirement for most behavioral therapist positions is about 2 weeks of on the job training. Receiving the certificate is optional after that.

I was also thinking it’d be a good thing to add since it is quite challenging and I can talk about how much teamwork is involved with the children, families, and my supervisors. Thanks for your feedback!
