I'm almost done with Midwestern's supp. and just need to attach a resume.

Upload a copy of your resume or curriculum vitae, which will include, but not be limited to the following information:

  • Educational history (colleges attended and degrees earned, do not include GPA or test information)
  • Work history
  • College extracurricular activities, honors, and leadership responsibilities
  • Community activities, honors, and leadership responsibilities
  • Medically related work and volunteer experiences
  • Hobbies and nonacademic interests
------------------------------

The last bit asks for hobbies and interests. Should I include?

My interests are different from most people:
-I enjoy frequenting new gadgetry websites like Gizmodo, Engadget, Techcrunch, etc
-New video game releases
-Going to movies

Should I bother including? It seems my hobbies, particularly #2, will paint in a bad light

I've never included hobbies in my resume before. But, since they explicitly instruct you to share your hobbies, I did. It's good you have different hobbies but I would leave out the hobbies that would reflect badly. Midwestern interviews are closed-file. So, if you are invited for an interview, you won't have an opportunity to explain what your hobbies are thorougly if not asked as a general question in the interview.

The instructions you posted did state "...which will include, but not be limited...", which I interpret as include at least all of the categories listed below.

Just put whatever interests you most. Video games, like all hobbies, are still healthy in moderate doses. I'm sure if you took your video game hobby to the extreme, you wouldn't have been able to keep up with school work 😀 If you're afraid of the stigma or negative connotation that "video games" carry, then don't include it.

thanks for the suggestion. i decided to keep it since it may provide for something interesting to talk about.

and supp is finally finished!

I'd keep the video game on the resume. Imagine if you played World of Warcraft and your interviewer also played World of Warcraft.

yes, and everyone i met who played WOW played it like it was an addiction.

for me, i spent an entire summer playing WOW on a private server with a few friends. i would literally go to work, come home and play wow, sleep, go back to work, and play more WOW. for one and a half months straight. we saw how addicted we were and stopped playing (and the fact that the server closed might have had something to do with it too 😛)

So you enjoy movies, video games, and browsing the internet? You really are unique, that combination must be like 1 in a billion. I can't think of anyone with such a different assortment of hobbies.

If it says to include your hobbies, why are you asking us? Unless your hobbies include kicking kittens into puppies I think you're fine, and as I've hopefully established, your hobbies are very very very normal.

If that is the extent of your hobbies, do not include them. I included my interests and some of my hobbies. For instance, I play chess as a hobby and play the flute and piano so I included those. My interests included stuff like world cultures, history, etc etc

Whatever you do, do NOT make stuff up!
