So I didn't decide that I wanted to be a doctor until about my sr year but by then I had a bad gpa. I stayed a year and retook some classes I had gotten Cs in and brought my science gpa up to a 3.1 and my cum up to a 3.0. I applied to a Biomedical Science program at Midwestern in illinois and got in, but decided to go to a M.S. in Bio at a different school because I got an assistantship at this other school and did not want to be 60K in debt when I could go to school for free. Anyway, I'm getting my master's and just got a C in adv phys although I got a high B in medical physiology. I'm really heart broken because I studied hard for that class and missed the B by like 3 points and not even bc I didn't know the material I just got nervous when I took the final. Anyway, I'm moving on and will be able to bring my gpa back up to about a 3.6 or so by the time I graduate in a year, but are my chances for medical school completely ruined?? I am going to work in a hospital this summer as an er scribe and hopefully shadow a D.O. but I don't even know if its worth it. Do you think I have a chance? I mean if midwestern thought I was completely hopeless they wouldn't have accepted me into their biomed program right? anyway, what are your opinions? please and thank you.

i mean i can get my master's gpa to 3.6 by the time i graduate my undergrad gpa is already set at 3.1/3.0 sci/cum

Man, we get threads like this all the time.

Take a look at the underdog thread for some perspective. To sum up though: you should be perfectly fine given a decent MCAT score.

You got a C settle down, yes you still have a chance, yes you probably need to do well on the MCAT, but don't give up.

I love that thread. Seriously, if you're feeling down check it out.

You totally have a chance and there is no reason to give up.

Confidence, buddy... and one more thing

Now seriously, how many people heard the song start playing in their head?

We need more information before we jump on the " you will get in, just try!" bandwagon. Not to be a pessimist, but if the OP has no clinical experience, no shadowing, and a bad MCAT, this is going to be a multiple year uphill battle.

Your undergrad GPA is not set in stone, and further classes taken that are not required for your masters are considered "Postbac" and are included in the undergrad GPA.

If you retake some of the lowest graded classes, AACOMAS will only include the most recent when calculating your application GPA, provided the credit hours are the same or greater (need not be retaken at the same school).

And provided you did well in the premed prerequisites, get a decent MCAT score, and end your masters with an upward grade trend, even without further GPA repair, if you get a 30+ MCAT score, you can probably get into one of the DO schools.

So you do still have a chance, provided you acquire the usual and customary ECs (1.5 years of clinical experience at 3-4 hours/week is average, along with about 50 shadowing hours), have some nonmedical community service to list, finish your research, and maybe do some teaching.

One of my friends had a 3.2 and was accepted, but he did very well on the MCAT. If he is telling the truth he had a 31 and was admitted to LECOM.
