Ok, so I am on three waitlists for MD schools and have an offer from a DO school. If i get off the waitlist for any MD school, I will attend, but if I don't, I am unsure what to do. The thought of reapplying is dreadful to me, but then again I don't want to make a decision I will regret for the rest of my life. I work with an MD and know of many patients who will not go to a DO. I don;t want to be stigmatized my whole life as a DO is that is the case. Is it wrong to feel ashamed as a DO? ugghhhh. Somebody put some sense into me. If I don't get into an MD school, should I just go for the DO rather than reapply for MD? I want to work in the ER; do DO's have trouble getting these residencies?

Go with DO if you dont get into MD.

A lot of DO's go into EM. It's probably one of the most popular residencies which DO's go into other then the obvious PCP.

Yes, you should be very ashamed of yourself. If you had Asian parents, they would disown you.

Honestly though, take the DO spot you are being offered and don't look back.

EM is definitely one of the DO friendly specialties...the physician group that covers the 3 hospitals i've transported patients to is about 40% DO docs, and up until a couple years ago the head of the dept was a DO. unless having the "MD" after your name is really that important, i would take the DO offer

haha very true judging from all the parents threads posted lately.

Why on earth did you apply to a DO school if you did NOT want to go. Remember, that if you turn down the DO, the DO door is forever closed. You will leave yourself with no choice, but to get into an MD program.

I second the last poster's sentiment.

It is not very smart to apply to a DO if you don't want to go to one. The whole point is asking, "if I only got into the DO would I go?" If not then you just shot your chances at DO because reapplying with a acceptance is not good.

On second thought though, no big deal. If you definitely don't want DO then it doesn't matter as you will just need to continue to reapply to MD.

If you are a good DO then you will not have a problem with EM matching. They match a ton of EM. Just go search a thread called DO match lists for last year, you can look at each graduating class and see how many matched into allo EM programs.

... I don't want to make a decision I will regret for the rest of my life. ... I don;t want to be stigmatized my whole life as a DO ... If I don't get into an MD school, should I just go for the DO rather than reapply for MD? ...

Looks like you answered your own question.

Your post seems very trollish. You have met many patients who will not see a DO. Frankly, I'm surprised that you have met many patients that have actually heard of the DO title.

Don't go DO. You clearly don't want it. You feel ashamed instead of proud of the acceptance. Don't waste your time or money on it. Reapply MD or go carrib.

csmittyB, you sound very ignorant..

I had a family member who was diagnosed with advanced colon cancer, and when our family saw the oncologist we were referred to had a D.O. title, our reaction was to immediately find someone with M.D. because its more reputable.

And you call me ignorant....

I clearly said our *immediate reaction* was to question this oncologist because of his D.O. designation in which we have never seen before.

Its understandable that people want to have the best doctors to treat them in life-threatening situations, and don't want to take the risk with an unfamiliar D.O.

Your a *****, and so is the family member

This was years ago when I was still a freshman in HIGH SCHOOL, I had no idea what a D.O. was back then.

My point was that people might avoid D.O. if they have a life-threatening illness and want absolutely the best care..

Of course I know that D.O. and M.D. are basically the same thing in practice, its just a perception of other people you won't be able to shake off.

I don't disagree with the statement. But you are assuming that because the doc has a degree you are not familiar with, he is not the best doc.

I still think the OP is troll.

How was your first instinct not "Doctor of Oncology"?

😱

THAT was the first thing that came to your mind?

In my experience of shadowing an EM doc who was DO, patients who are sick or in pain just want to feel better. They don't care who the heck you are or where you got your degree (US, Carribean, the moon), they just want to get well. As far as you should be concerned, if a patient is so snobby that they would seek out a different doctor, they aren't sick enough to warrant your care.

That would have been my first thought. Also, a lot of the top institutes in the country have D.O.s on staff. The Dana-Farber has one. Stanford has a couple. MSK has a few.

I'm surprised anyone pays that much attention to initials on badges, especially since they can go on forever. There is a doctor at the Dana-Farber whose badge read: "RN, BSN, MD, PhD, MBA." Turns out he was an army nurse that decided to pursue an MD/PhD after service. He then took a year sabbatical to pursue an executive MBA. I asked him a number of times why "RN" was first since patients would think he was a nurse if they didn't read through his entire badge. He always used to say "I'm a nurse first, and a doctor second. First I provide care then I treat."

Would you not go to this doctor as soon as you saw RN?

Why is that when someone doesn't want to go the DO route they are labeled a troll?

I never did either and I didn't bother to apply DO.

OP - if you feel that reapplying will get you into a MD school and that is what will make you happier then go for it. If you feel that going to the DO school you will always be asking yourself if you could have been a MD then reapply. People who go to DO schools really want to go and if you really don't then reapply!

There is a difference between you and OP.

I still don't understand the anti-DO thing. Hands down, the two most outstanding physicians I've seen in my life were DOs. Their training is virtually identical to MDs, plus they have some additional training in osteopathic manipulation. They need to pass the same boards as MDs (and their own boards as well). They are eligible for nearly every residency position that an MD can get. All you MD snobs better get your heads straight if you plan on working as physicians, because you'll almost certainly be working side-by-side with (or under) DOs .

But still... fewer than 10 posts (check)... starting an anti-DO thread (check)... OP reeks of troll.

People should NOT apply DO if they don't want to go to a DO school. SIMPLE!
Also, 5 of the 7 posts of the OP are about MD vs DO (check). I'm with you. Troll.

Well, then that becomes the patient's problem. For every patient like that there will be another 5 patients lined up trying to get an appointment. If DO's don't have an issue filling their schedule (and they don't), who cares about a few ignorant skeptics?
