Is it worth it to postpone graduation just to pursue a minor? In say, chemistry? I am majoring in Neuroscience, and wasn't going to do a minor…but found out that I can do a chem minor with only a couple more classes. However, I was going to graduate early but this means I need to push it by another semester. Also, I'm not 100% interested in the minor…but it might look good for medical school right? Esp since almost everyone has a double major or minor nowadays :/

Really? I thought they see everything on your transcript! Where is this information?

Yes, they see all your classes. But they do not see anything that indicates a completed minor, and they give a quick gloss to your coursework -- really is not worth another semester if you don't want it. If you want to brag about the minor, you have to write about it somewhere, but that seems pretty silly.

All in all, you're probably better off finding a job as a lab tech and getting research experience that delaying graduation. Unless, of course, your GPA needs help.

A definite no then

Unless you need help with your GPA, I would say no. Like someone else said, use the time to study for the MCAT, volunteer, and/or do some research. Whatever you do, just don't sit around.

I would say, only do it if you are genuinely interested in what you're going to be studying (ie: you aren't doing it for med school purposes) and only if it's not going to be a financial burden. College is fun, and you only get to do it once.

edit: nvm, OP said there is no interest in the minor. If you aren't interested don't do it.

In this case, if I were to do a minor now, it would be mostly for med school purposes. I do have an interest in doing a dance or art minor, but unfortunately, I'm going to need more than one semester to complete that, and I don't want to have to postpone graduation that long :/

It is 300% not worth it to do a minor. No one cares about your minor at all in the medical school applications process. It is more a thing that matters when applying to graduate degrees outside of medicine and law, or to securing certain jobs in which showing a focus in an area can make you stand out. Medicine is a broad course of study, so a small focus from a minor is basically meaningless.

@philosonista Yes, they do see your minors, you indicate any minors on your application.

That being said, totally not worth it to graduate late for a minor.

Under no circumstances should you pursue this minor. If you are really at want for something to do in the meantime, I would suggest Halo.

I'm actually graduating a semester early…so taking the minor would not really make me graduate late. But I get your point…no reason to do it just for med school praises, especially if they really don't care about minors.

O reallllly. Someone told me you don't. Actually, I think LizzyM said that, though it might have been that it didn't appear on the console she looks at for each applicant or something. @LizzyM -- do you see minors?

Interesting, I just looked at the PDF version of my app and it says my minors right next to my major.

@LizzyM -- followup questions, in the rare event that someone graduated from two separate four-year undergraduate universities at the same time, what do you see?

How is that possible?
I suppose that it would show the names of the two schools on separate lines and then the attendance dates, major, minor, gpa and credits.

I'm taking classes at two institutions, and happen to be finishing both BA's at the same time.

Thanks for answering 😀
