So I finished out my first semester with a 3.06 GPA. OUCH. I know and I also know that if I want to seem competitive going into med school application process in a couple years. I will need to show tremendous upward trend (As from here out). However, one thing still pesters me as to whether I should retake Chem and Calc over some summer and improve my GPA there or whether it is better to just move on entirely. I realize this can be a question for my academic/pre-med adviser, however, I hope I can acquire insight through here as well. I go to WUSTL by the way.

I would only if you are sure you can get an A
The would make the grade a B

No, I would say it's unnecessary since your GPA can be salvaged by performing better in your classes from here on out. Also, many schools don't do grade replacements, so depending on the school, your GPA may still be hit with the C's even if you were to retake the courses. You're only one semester in, you have plenty of time.

Cut your losses and work on improving. I had two C's in two of my core sciences my freshman year and showed improvement; no adcom questioned my ability to handle med school.

When you apply AMCAS (MD)will use all of your grades to figure your GPAs. So retaking will not help much at this point. (The DO application process does replace the grades. ) Work hard and show a consistent upward trend from this point on. Work on your ECs and things should be fine. Good luck!
