Hi all, long time reader first time blah blah...
I just got my MCAT scores and am wondering if I should retake before applying this June for MD/PhD programs, I'm going to list my basic stats, let me know what you think.
34 MCAT (11V, 12PS, 11B)
3.99 GPA at middle ranked school (GPA could change during this last 4th year)
2 years research experience including one summer internship at a medical college and another summer research award at home university
Will likely be a published author (have a shot at first co-author, but could end up further down the list) or at least have paper submitted by June 2014 (molecular bio stuff)
~45 hours shadowing an MD/PhD and 120 hours volunteering at nursing home
Registered EMT-b
Mom says I interview well (haha, jus playin yo)
Few other things but that's the main picture...
I was hoping to have a shot at competitive MD/PhD programs when applying, and got my hopes up as my MCAT practice score average was around a 37 (got one 33 with rest falling between 35-40)...
I am considering retaking this January, using winter break to study up and then working for a week or two into winter semester before retaking the MCAT
With my current score do I have a shot at competitive programs already? And is it a bad idea to retake as it risks getting a lower score? I really feel like I could do better, but do understand that it's a risk nonetheless...
Thanks!
