I recieved a C+ in Gen Chem 1. would it be better to retake it or leave it and see how i do in my other classes? I am really anxious about how this C will affect my chances for med school. Has anyone here gotten a C or worse in their science classes and still gotten in to a good med program without retaking it?

No. No one with a C has ever gotten into a good medical school, however some of the less prestigious janitorial programs might consider you if you have a good explanation for that C.

2 Cs. 1 in first semester orgo and another in an upper level endcrinology class. Didn't retake either one and am a 2nd year at an east coast med school.

Your sarcasm is unneeded, the OP had a serious question. The reality is that there are many students who gets As and Bs in gen chem who do not get in to medical school, so it is a reasonable concern. That being said, OP is early in his academic career. I do not believe a retake is necessary. Instead, improve your study habits and succeed in the future. Having a few Cs is not a big deal. Good Luck!

How was the rest of your semester? I think you may consider it if the rest of your grades were not strong as well.

I spoke with someone on an adcom about this once, and they seemed forgiving. They said as long as you show improvement from that point on, and don't make it a habit (duh), you should be fine. Just improve from this point on.

Pre-meds are allowed to be human once, maybe twice, in their academic career, but that's about it.

Are you sure you can retake it even if you want to? Many schools will only let you retake classes if you get a D or F.

well my first semester freshman year was my worst (3.19) mainly because of the Chem grade. the rest of the semesters, i have had nothing lower than a 3.6 per semester. I don't exactly know my cGPA, but because i have taken only 3 science classes, i know that my sGPA is much lower.

yes, i can take the class again.

I have one more question: if i decided to transfer and took Chem at the new school and recieved an A, would colleges see this Chem grade? I know that retaking the class at my current school would mean that schools med schools will see the average of the two (ie i recieve a C+ and A, so my "true" chem grade would actually be a B)

You have to report all grades and send in all transcripts when you do your AMCAS application, so the transfer school and all medical schools that you apply to will see the grade no matter what. If it were me, and I'd only taken the minimum number of science classes, I'd retake it.

That isn't entirely accurate. They see both grades, not an average. So if you get a C in a 3 credit hour course and retake it for an A, you effectively have 6 hours of 3.0, not 3 hours.
