I have received an acceptance to a good school, but was waitlisted at my top school and I'm really hoping to get in. I plan to defer for a year at either school. Should I send a LOI to my top school anyway, and should I mention that I plan to defer?
You need to find out what the deferral policies are. Some schools will not grant you a deferral without a compelling reason, and often some schools will flat out not offer any deferrals. I would NOT let any school where you are waitlisted know your plan to defer admission; that gives them reason to just reject you.

Expect to begin on time at one of the two until you have confirmed the possibility of deferral from current institution.

Even if current allows, but you get off waitlist, top program may not.

Don’t tell current program you’re waiting to hear back and deferring. And agree, don’t mention deferral to waitlist because you will be denied Since In their minds you’re not planning on attending. Auto reject.
