I am a non-tradtional student with half my prereqs completed over a decade ago (still need approx 20 science credit hrs.). I would like to send by e-mail to Creighton, Nova, U of F, Palm Altlantic a copy of the pre-reqs I have completed. I want to find out what I need to do/know to become more competitive to their program. What does anyone think about this? Does anyone have any suggestions. If it's a good idea might someone have a recommended contact person at these schools? 😕

I would certainly check with the individual schools. It really depends which ones you took that long ago. I had Physics w/Calc, Engineering Calculus and Chem I in 1982. UF says they will accept them (yes, I have it in writing), but that I would probably want to make sure I remembered my Chemistry (I didn't, so I took it again). I did get my AA back then, so I don't have to worry about all the non-science requirements. Good luck!

You need to be a Florida resident for UF. They let in so few out of state students. We have one girl from Georgia in our class, everyone else is a resident. Since you're applying to so many Florida schools why don't you just move here?

Actual I have a house in Tampa. My wife is completing her residency in Chgo (I was born and raised in Chgo but have always disliked the city). I am trying to figure out what to do without putting the rest of my family through the gruelling one we already went through (wife went to UIC med school). Thanks

Dude, your wife's gonna be a doctor. You don't have to work!! It's called gold digging. 😀

I'm just kidding!! 😀

A teacher makes more money than a resident. Further, after you pay the 150k loan plus malpractice what do you have? A living (which I do not complain about). I wanted to be a pharmacist 8 yrs. ago but my wife got accepted to med school. With children over the past years it has been difficult to think beyond the family.

My interest into pharmacy school came from my interest in becoming a Chemistry teacher. Do you know the awful salary and responsibilty placed on teachers? I wanted the ability to be knowledgeable about something that would benefit people, being able to have the flexibilty to work anywhere in the US, and be a role model for my kids (hell if the old man could do it so can we). I only hope that I can go to school and not put my family through the horrific life it has been waiting for my wife to finish and move to Florida. Believe me I wouldn't want my best friend having to go through this lifestyle unless he/she was single, young and dreamed of becoming a doctor (hell I couldn't talk my sister with a child out of going to med school).

My hat's off to you! I seriously don't see how I could have children and go to professional school at the same time. That's why I'm trying to get all my school done before having kids. I'm only 19, btw. 😀

Only wish you (and all memebers of this forum) happiness and good fortune

There a few of my classmates that are in a similiar situation to yours and I have to say that the amount (and quality) of work they produce, in addition to their responsibilities at home, is something to be proud of and I know I speak for everyone I class when I say that we all have great respect for them. Best of luck to you.

I can only comment about UF, but I would get any confirmations about your courses in writing. I was kind of in the same boat with old classes and got my speech course from years ago approved and my language requirement waived. Then I got a letter 2 months before the semester started saying that the speech course wouldn't work and I needed the language. I had to petition admissions to get the previous decision accepted.

Is there any chance you might be able to visit the schools in person? I was in a similar situation (with "old" pre-reqs) and I wasnt able to visit the school because it was just too far away. I called the Dean and spoke to him about my situation and asked for suggestions on improving my chances of acceptance. They basically told me that they would accept my "old" pre-reqs but that I'd need to take more classes to prove myself. Well, that wasn't there exact words, but that was what it boiled down to. I think it also helps if you can take a fulltime load since they want to see that you can handle the load in pharmacy school.

Good luck! I just finished my first semester after many years of wanting to go to pharmacy school and I have to say that the wait was well worth it!
