Should I start my pre-reqs this summer or wait?

I recently decided that I am going to pursue medical school. I'll be a senior this fall majoring in journalism and minoring in apparel just because it was easy and we're required to have a minor. I've talked with the pre-med adviser at my school and she said it's not too late to take this path. I'll just be at my university for a few more years completing my prereqs and raising my GPA which is a 2.7 (super low, I know). I have the option to take Bio I and Physics I to get started this summer, but I planned the summer on working and saving up. I'm currently broke unless I find a job in my college town. Classes start in two weeks and I'm actually excited to go back strangely. Do I go back and get a head start or stay and work? It's in my gut that I should start because I don't want to stay at my university for 2 or more years after graduation just to complete my prereqs.

My mom is basically talking me out of going to medical school because this wasn't my plan from the beginning. She would like me to go into the workforce as a journalist but it's not what I want anymore. She's worried about my debt because I'm already close to $50,000 just for undergrad and I'm an in-state student. I think it's dumb to work and then go back to school when I can just go straight through. Medical school has been on my mind since sophomore year but I never thought I could do it until now. I figured if I take these two classes that I could see if I'm cut out for it.

So the overall question is do I go back to school for the summer or put it off and hope to have room in my fall and spring schedule to complete some of the requirements? I only want to complete maybe 1-1.5 more years at this institution if it's possible to get them done within that timeframe. I'm still graduating on time with my journalism degree but I'm staying to complete prereqs.

Have any of you changed to pre-med right at the end of your undergrad and had to stay to do your prereqs?

take a breather and prepare for the fall. Med schools frown upon taking the science prerequisite in the summer. Also maybe consider doing a post bacc or smp program to help bring your GPA up.

@gonnif Why is it a bad idea to take summer classes? It's the same thing as taking it during the semester just condensed. I'm basically at the point where I need to see if I can even handle the science classes being that I haven't taken science or math in years. Summer classes at my university are usually less stressful than taking them during the school year so it actually helps me a little. I'm also a student athlete who has a lot on his plate already.

Because medical schools, on the whole, prefer full term courses. The courses being condensed and less stressful may have something to do with it

Applicants should avoid taking more than one or two prerequisite science courses during the summer and avoid taking them at community colleges.

What about non prereqs in the summer/online?

What if I won't be able to finish the pre-read before I graduate unless I take two or three classes over the summer? What do medical schools think of taking a pre-req or two after I graduate?
