Hey SDN!

Right now I'm trying to decide if I should take biochemistry lab this fall. This class is NOT required for my major and according to some students at my university this class can be difficult since the professor is hella strict. Classes I will also be taking include orgo 1, genetics, and calc 2, so having more time to focus on these classes would be nice. However, I feel like I would be missing out on some lab experience/techniques that could be useful in the future.

What do you guys think? Should I opt out of this class and focus more on my pre reqs or should I bite the bullet and take this possibly difficult class?

From what I've heard from other friends and students that are in med school, is that the lab didn't benefit them too much. I would focus on pounding out those classes and getting the highest GPA you can. This is what I've gathered through opinions and by no means if this the only answer.

What year are you, and will you be taking the 2015 MCAT? If you don't have to take the new test, why not wait to take it senior year after you have already applied.

Exactly, OP, only worry about it if you have to take the 2015 MCAT.

You need to know stuff from biochemistry lab on top of all the other new stuff for MCAT 2015?

Dang, I'm sorry.

The new test will have more biochem but less organic chem, so it is a trade off I guess.

Dude, a lab class is a bad idea if you want to gain experience with techniques. Just do research in basic science if you're interested.

Biochem lab.is a waste of time when it's not required. Avoid it.

No you don't. the people who say otherwise don't know what they're talking about. Know the info from biochem, but not from biochem lab.

However, if OP is applying 2016 or later, he'll need biochem lab.

As I have said before, at this pace the 2050 MCAT will have a driving skills section.

I will be a sophomore in the fall, and so far I'm planning to take the new 2015 MCAT. Sorry for my ignorance but really how does a lab class relate to the MCAT in any way? I mean I know that the lab will refer to topics related to biochem but I can't imagine something that I will need to remember from the lab itself.

I am currently working in a lab at my univ, so I'm already familiar with the basic structure of how a lab works but maybe perhaps I might learn something useful from this lab?

Anyways thanks for the advice!

The lab has no bearing on the MCAT. If anything, you'll see experimental passages in the MCAT will all the info presented there.

For your second question, take the lab if you're sincerely interested in it. But I am strongly recommending you NOT to do it, simply because that professor sounds like a pain in the rear end, and the least thing you want to have is such type of professor in a biology (or chemistry) lab.

Oh, I know that biochem will be required in more and more places. Where are you getting biochem lab from (please be more specific than "See this 158 page PDF")

A few schools I saw on the MSAR (I don't remember on top of my head now) recommend having biochem with lab.
