Hey everybody,

I received an email today from a member of the agency I have been volunteering at who said that they have received a grant to fund a student assistant to help them write a book proposal on sex/gender and biomedical lab research.

If I work on this, will it benefit my app? I am interested in this opportunity, personally, but it may require me to reschedule my summer job hours etc so i'd like to know if anybody can provide some insight on this so that I can work towards a decision.

Appreciate it,

Although it is more geared towards sociology, it could potentially help, if you can get your name on a publication or if this is something you are passionate about. From my experience with medical school interviews you want to participate in activities that will be easy and exciting for you to talk about. Ideally they should be related to medicine, or at least peripherally related. Maybe explore your options a bit but if nothing else comes up I would take the opportunity. If you also get involved with a medically related volunteer opportunity regularly you should have a solid application.

@iceet , thank you for your reply.

I am currently volunteering at my local hospital, the organization works with senior patients (aged 65+) we work to achieve:
  • Cognitive stimulation -- orientation of date/time/place
  • Therapeutic activities -- friendly visiting
  • Mobilization – supervised ROM, walking
  • Prevention of dehydration and malnutrition
  • Promote sleep hygiene
On top of this I have volunteered with a transgender support group (presenting health topics, working with clients to achieve greater health), soccer coach, swimming aid, needle exchange/harm reduction program, and a counselor at local center for disadvantaged youth... So I guess I am trying to find an opportunity to add some research or publications into my application. I think it may be good just to add some diversity and filler into my current list.

Your application seems very solid. Getting some research experience is definitely a great idea. The only problem is that you live in Canada, and I hear Canadian medical schools are even more competitive than those in the US due to a limited number of seats and a large number of applicants. Make sure you apply to a broad range of schools in the United States as well. If you can learn conversational Spanish, you could even apply to Puerto Rican medical schools, which are also LCME accredited.

Thanks iceet 👍

I will be moving to the states to work as an RN, it is through this work opportunity that I will acquire a green card and apply as a US citizen to US DO schools. Definitely planning to apply to a number of schools !

Sounds like a plan @TheShowGoesOn I wish you the best of luck. Let me or the forum know if you need anymore advice.
