I have the option to take an exam and skip out on Biochem - I was a first year last year and took medical leave. I'm wondering if I should just test out of the class or take the class as practice for STEP1...

I would take it.

I would DEFINITELY test out of biochem.

Biochem is not a high yield subject for boards. Molecular biology is much more high yield for the USMLE Step 1. Please use the extra time to study for other classes, sleep, go out, etc. G'luck.

I would test out of it as well. Biochem is not high yield for step1 and most of the biochem that is on step1 is mixed into another subject like pathology. For instance sphingolipids will be asked in the context of Gaucher's, etc.... Know the TCA, ETC, Hexosmonose phosphate shunt, cori and other cycles, as well as the shuttle pathways(carnitine, alanine etc..).
