My college is affiliated with LECOM’s program, which is an early assurance to DO school. It gives you a provisional seat in your class and there is no MCAT required if you meet all the requirements. And you can only apply if you’re a sophomore or FROSH. Do you think this is a good idea if I want to become a psychiatrist in the future?

Are you OK with a school that has a mandatory lecture attendance and dress code?
OK with having to learn OMT/OMM and take both COMLEX and USMLE (although for the DO friendly specialties, COMLEX alone should be enough)?
OK with having the more competitive specialties out of reach? Ditto the better residency programs at university hospitals?
The this program should be OK.

Can you please elaborate on what you said? I am very much confused and worried by the things you mentioned.

These are the things about medical education that you need to understand about your intended school. DO students face some further obstacles to their career goals (listed above) that MD students simply don't have.

Thank you so much for informing me! I will not step a foot in anything related to DO schools. I had no idea these challenges existed.

He's not necessarily saying DO is out of the question. Depending on what kind of student you are, it might actually make more sense to go down that path. The suggestion here is to do some more research into the educational background of MD vs DO, and the process of becoming licensed. You may also want to look up how DO graduates have faired in terms of matching into Psychiatry residency programs (if you're absolutely sure that's the specialty you want).

No OP. You can get into schools on your own merits and do not need to do this. I say do not limit yourself to that place.

If OP has a GPA < 3.5, OP may be regretting this decision two years from now.
Trust me, I will definitely have above 3.7.

I will see my GPA this year and decide what route I should take. This is part of my research (asking you guys).

I’m a first gen student, so I don’t know a lot of people who know about these stuff.

Have you taken Orgo or Physics yet?

I was in LECOM early acceptance program as a sophomore and opted to apply traditionally after taking the MCAT. OP, think long and hard before deciding to not take the medical school acceptance. most of my UG friends were in dual-programs (including LECOM). their lives were much less stressful during junior and senior year than mine (from an academic perspective, obviously). the app process is very stressful. i have friends at LECOM right now, and they like it there.

After interviewing at LECOM, many of the students there seemed very happy, so going that route isn't necessarily going to ruin you. Just be realistic and understand the differences between MD and DO and what that will mean in practical terms down the road. I wouldn't take any advice on here or anywhere else as gospel truth. Take it all with a grain of salt and do your own research to come to a conclusion, this topic is important, its your future.
