Hey guys,

I just graduated from UW with a Biochem degree, and will be working for the Red Cross through Americorps this next year. I had a 3.73 GPA with a 34 on my MCAT (12 PS 11VB 11BS). Do you think I have a shot at a top 10 med school (ie. Harvard, Columbia, Stanford). Although my scores are competitive, I am afraid that being an Asian Indian male is going to hurt me during the application process. What do you guys think?

I think you definitely have a shot, especially since you're doing something really medicine-related for a year before you apply (and the average age for matriculants is steadily rising). However, your scores are simply average for a lot of the top schools (Harvard: 35, GPA 3.8; Columbia: 36, 3.8; Stanford 36, 3.8), so you really need to stand out in other points of your application to be considered.

I think that you should go away and stop trolling!!!! 😡

You've got a shot, your numbers are at least competitive. In fact, your numbers look almost perfectly average for a top 10 school, maybe a little low on the MCAT for a few but close. All you have to lose is the application fee.

I think you are being silly!! you should apply and not worry about what race you are that is just rediculous. be proud of who you are because if you aren't, it will show during the interview process. keep your head up and have confidence. if a school denies you because of your race then shame on them, but you keep on stepping to the next school and show them what you are made of!!!! don't be defeated by yourself... 👍

Not stand-out competitive, but you are also not out the of running. Yours stats place you near the middle of the pool at these schools.

This is true for schools ranked 10-25 (or maybe more) also.

If you can't get into a top 10 school then your life is basically a huge failure.

You're parents tell you that too?!?! I thought I was the only one 😀

yup. And if you're not the youngest director of cardiothoracic surgery department in the USA, you're screwed as well 🙁

I heard the average MCAT score for an Indian male is a 32 - so there is hope!

Thanks for the advice!

Where did you get that MCAT stat for Indian males? ( I know i should ignore race, but I just think it is interesting that someone actually compiled the numbers)

I think you should go to an offshore med school. Thats the only place you are going to get in. Top ten medical schools only except pure Asians, not the mix.

FYI Chris Caulfield

Asian Indian doesn't mean "mixed" it means an Indian that is not "Native American". Many people still call Native Americans "Indian" and I did not want to be vague and confuse anyone reading the thread by just saying "Indian".
