Should it bother me that my fiance will be an MS2 when I am an MS1?

Haha, Id hate to say it but I would have a tinge of something, though I can't think of a fitting word. (Jealousy maybe? Inferiority? I don't know) I'm sure it will pass, though. At least you can get quality advice from them. I have a lot of friends who are a year ahead (and two years younger! Damn 7year program people) and I'll admit Im a bit jealous at times, but that is just because they are having all the fun while Im finishing up these last couple undergrad classes...
 
I know a guy who went to my undergrad with his girlfriend and they both started med school together. However, he didnt end up doing too well and had to repeat alot of his M1 year while she moved on to M2 year. AND shes nearly 3 years younger than he is. But he never really makes an issue of it. He accepts things as he is, was able to pick himself up, and now were both 2nd years and doing fine. All that means is that for one year, shell be a doctor and he wont. And after that, there wont even be any distinction.
 
Of course I am incredibly greatful, I asked her to marry me. I asked the question only half seriously. I'm not a male chauvinist but ya know there is the part of me that wants to be the one thats like 'Look babe I've been there, this is how its done.'
 
Um no it shouldn't bother you at all. Let her show you how school is done..you can show her how other things are done..😉

Think how great it will be to have someone to help you learn any possibly difficult material? Plus, having a person that has already been through it as a support system is great.

You will have a great leg up on your classmates I would think.

Consider me converted. That said, I think having your fiance in the same room is a great bonus. Just think of all the study rooms and cramped aisles in the library that are just waiting to be christened.

:laugh: Heck, I fully plan to do that even though my girlfriend (who will probably be my fiancee by the time I enter medical school) will not be a fellow student.

anywho, it sure is nice to have somebody give you notes, textbooks, tips, and tricks so that YOU might end up doing better than her... unless she's a competitive little....

I don't see the drawback to this... sex and good grades? you have it made bro...use it to your advantage.

I was thinking that the residency match w/ one of them being stuck still in med school would be difficult... that's all. Should have clarified.

Honestly, the whole seniority position deal should be a non-issue, if it is, you probably have deeper problems you need to work on...

There are tons of couples that manage this every year. Someone hangs out and does research or an MPH for a year so they can couples match, or (more often) they sit down at the beginning of the application process and choose major cities that they would like to be in. First person matches in one of those cities, so the 2nd one only applies to programs within an easy commuting distance. There are enough cities with a bunch of residency programs that it's not that difficult.

My gf will be MS3 when I am MS1 and I might end up at same school as her.

Anytime they start to get feisty and pull the MS card on you, just retire the little general for a while and they'll learn the folly of their ways.
 
Ah, the joys of being female in a still largely hierarchical world - not having to feel strange when your boyfriend is a few years ahead of you in med school while you're trying to get your foot in the door at any med school you can.

Seriously though dude, suck it up! 😉 One year isn't a huge difference and besides, she'll be really helpful when you're trying to figure out how to finangle rotations, getting professor's tricky exam questions/formats down, etcetera. Plus, instead of doing that whole long distance thing at different med schools, you'll have it made. As someone else mentioned, I think the worst times will be 3rd/4th year when you're doing hardcore clinics and she's in clinics/rotating away at possible residency spots and during 4th/residency when you could be across country from each other. Worry about those later!
 
Ask yourself: would you have a problem with you being an MS2 when she's an MS1? That way you'll know if your concerns are about finding time together, matching into the same place, etc., or if they are really just a displaced fear of being "inferior" to your fiancee.

I think tucker max is HILARIOUS. Even though I am a girl, I can't help laughing at all his stories. My favorite quote from him was when he was talking about hooking up with a really stupid girl, he goes "the smartest thing to ever come out of her mouth was my d*ck"

Hey, if you're planning to couples match for your residency, she's going to have to wait an extra year and probably get an MPH or do research. That means she'll probably get a better residency than you and you'll spend the rest of your life feeling inferior! Ah, the joys of chauvinism!

True!!! And anyhow, it depends on who does a longer vs. shorter residency too. Who knows if you do a shorter residency you may be practicing before your fiance or at the same time as them.

Think about this, you are doing a 4 year residency and them a 5 yr residency then it will even out. LOL

Dude... mine is about to start her 4th yr of surgery residency and I'm an incoming M1. Also, she is an MD and I will be a DO. It hasn't bothered me in the least (except for the logistics of it all, but not applicable in your case. Just be thankful you'll be at the same school).

Seriously...the only issue here was how they would handle post-medical school when he could face the possibility of not matching in the same area as her. But after 9 years, it doesn't matter anymore unless he chose neurosurgery lol.
