I met with a rep from one of "the big 3" loupe companies. He took my measurements, and I placed an order. The loupes came in, and when I put them on, I had quite severe double vision. No amount of adjusting the nosepiece, frames, chums, etc, fixed it. I was pretty confident one of the oculars wasn't aligned correctly, so I sent it back for them to realign them.

I just got them back today. Right when I put them on, I had double vision. Not as severe as the first time, but double vision nonetheless. I spent about 15 minutes messing with the nosepiece, adjusting the frame, playing with the tension on the chums, etc, and I finally get it so the image from the left ocular and the right ocular match up. However, I take them off, and put them on a couple minutes later, and I have to play with them for another few minutes to get the vision correct.

Am I correct in assuming that your loupes should work every single time you put them on? I can't imagine having to do this in clinic every time I take them on or off. I'm afraid the company is sick and tired of me at this point, and I want to make sure I'm not the one doing something wrong.

I just noticed something weird...

When I look down at my computer keyboard with them (and I have both eyes open), the "T" and the "Y" are blending together if that makes sense. My left eye is "seeing" the T and the right is "seeing" the Y. That's the double vision I was talking about.

The weird thing is that when I close my left eye, then alternate (open the left while closing the right) a few times, and then open both eyes, both eyes are now focused and everything is normal.

I promise my eyes aren't screwed up. I don't wear glasses or anything like that. It's like when you're trying to look at a Magic Eye and your eyes focus in different ways, or like when you are shooting and your eyes can shift from the target, to your front sight, to your rear sight, etc.

I have another pair of loupes on trial (not from one of "the big 3"), and theirs have never done this to me. I just put them on and they work right every time.

Has anyone had issues like this?

I've never had issues like that. Mine just work straight away. It definitely sounds like there's something wrong with that pair.

edit: I'm also using DFV, and have had no problems.

You should not have to bend the frames to make em perfect. if you don't mind, which company makes the frames you are having trouble with?

I had orascoptic and had the same issues you're dealing with, got fed up, returned them and got dfv. No issues now. However, I have friends with orascoptic with no issues at all.

I hate my DFV...the safety lens cracked and the magnify lens chipped, i am getting a new loupe

Do you not use the big padded case that they came in? My pair with Buddy H frames are built like a tank.

It sounds like your telescopes aren't lined up properly, b/c you're having trouble converging the images. I have DFV, the safety goggle frames, and I've never had them adjusted once.

If you know you don't have a problem with your near vision, then it's most likely a combination of incorrect working distance and interpupillary distance. The reps that come and take your measurements aren't exactly optometrists now, and even a slight miscalculation could make for some annoying results.
