Should there be an IQ limit for future physicians?

Let's face it. It was so many youth's dreams to become doctors, many realized they were incompetent at adolescence; however, many continued on to pursue this dream in college. I know MANY premeds at my college who I clearly see as incompetent, they lack the basic intelligence to become proficient docs. And what scares me is that some of these people through sheer willpower will actually prevail and eventually become a physician by padding their resumes with ECs and kissing up for stellar LORs. All of this conveys their passion, but sorry, passion isn't enough.

I love my fellow humans. I don't want to see my friends/family killed or debilitated by sub-par doctors who lack intrinsic reasoning and judgment to perform their jobs proficiently.

My proposal is that one should take a basic IQ test by a licensed state psychologist in order to see if they qualify for the profession. This is not a dictatorial policy, it is simply one that works in the interest of the lives of others. Minimum should be around 130.

Any suggestions/comments?

You forget those little things like GPA and MCAT scores.
What basis do you have to say that IQ tests are more indicative of being a successful physician than undergrad performance and MCAT scores?

But let us assume your idea is awesome thus far... Your proposed minimum is 130. Eh??? Hell, most (read: over 75%) of physicians wouldn't be physicians.

You do realize most doctors aren't even at a 130 IQ, right?

Also, I strongly think people with visible narcissistic/better-than-thou mentalities seeking to "care for the lesser ones" should be banned. A simple psychological test should satisfy this.

And fyi, whatever IQ, if you can get a great MCAT and GPA, you can hack medical school. Noticed the high retention rate proof, yet?

gotta love someone who hasn't even been through med school thinking that someone who has "prevailed" (and therefore passed med school/residency) isn't qualified due to IQ

I don't know if you know this or not, but your IQ is a measure of how much you are able to learn, not how smart you are. You could have a large IQ and still be the heroin addict that dropped out of high school, or you could have a sub par IQ and fill your brain to the brim with knowledge and be a great doc.


(unless my gen psych prof taught me the wrong definition of IQ, in which case disregard this post)
 
IQ limit? Like if your IQ is above 150 you shouldn't be a doc? I think you mean IQ basement, not limit.

Also there shouldn't be a limit. And any basement is usually established through prereq courses and the MCAT anyway.
 
You seem pretty confident. How do you know if you would have the required IQ?
 
Being a Doctor is more than having the intelligence. You need to have people skills, learn to adapt to tough situations, and be a leader. From my personal experience, the individuals with the higher IQ lack these crucial aspects of a physician. You can have all the intelligence in the world but it's meaningless if you don't know how to convey it to others.

The IQ test is a useful tool for measuring certain types of qualities that may potentially correlate with intelligence, but suggesting that the IQ test is a suitable tool for measuring whether or not someone is qualified to be a physician is just asinine.

IQ =/= intelligence
 
The IQ test is known to be cultural biased, if it were to be used then there may be a bigger gap b/w nonurms and urms. Plus, people who arent necessarily "street smart" or competent in your terms could do quite well on an IQ test. Case in point i knew a person who would just constantly, and a mean constantly state the obvious, but apparently she had an IQ of 110, so goes to show what relatively "dumb" people can really do

Many would consider the MCAT as the weeder of the inferior beings, but I beg to differ. The MCAT is a test that depends partially on intelligence and partially on environmental forces (e.g. how much you studied). This results in people with less natural intellect compensating by over studying to achieve their score. Believe me, I've seen some stupid people break 34+ by doing nothing but study everyday for about 4 months.

We essentially need a test that one can't prepare for. The IQ test is the answer.

*Flatearth: Wtf is a basement? I've never before heard that term in reference to limiting any types of scores whether they be greater than or less than a predesignated zone. Limit implied the limit for proficiency as a physician should be 130.

*No, I do NOT think the IQ limit should be any lower than 130. I was being generous when I arbitrarily chose that number. Any lower and malpractice incidents would be higher than they already are. Do you know how many dumb as nails family physicians I've encountered who can't diagnose for **** if it's anything more than a cold or a ****ing muscle ache?

1) limit automatically implies upper limit unless you specifically say lower limit.

2) basement is a lower limit. have you not taken an econ course or is that too good for 130+ IQ people (~125 IQ here.....feelsbadbrah.tiff)

Basement is a colloquial term with little meaning. Limit can be used both ways.

Hey, wow. Being a doctor is the same thing. Either you can be very smart and good at tests or you can study a lot. The end result is the same. If you pass your boards you're competent.

If you don't like your doctors find new ones.

Or be less pretentious.

Sad thing is, I know someone irl exactly like you applying to medical school.

There are MANY factors necessary to become an excellent doctor, some of which are not tested, but IQ level is not one of them. Just offhand, maturity and tolerance for your noncompliant patients might come in handy.

Now I just gotta know, what the hell IS your IQ that you can brag like that?

Here's a little food for thought. I am not a troll, but you all obviously perceive me as one. If you all hate trolls so much, then why is it that supposed "inflammatory" threads such as these garner the most attention and the highest rate of posts per minute over the threads of people actually asking for help/advice on these forums? Quite hypocritical of you, if you ask me.

For the self-proclaimed above-average intellectual who's purportedly claimed that we are inferior by an extensive margin, you seem to&#65279; distinguish your aggressive emotions in a rather harsh, but completely immature and insufferably childish manner. You also seem to feed on other people's reactions to your implied actions which is easily comparable to an emotionally distraught schoolyard bully. Is it true that you are what you say you are, or are you just trying too hard on covering your paper-thin persona of a generic street rebel in order to attempt to impose a decent threat to your "opponents" in a flawed deliberation to achieve mild social dominance to feel something other than hatred about yourself?

I believe any semblance of reasonable discussion has been had, so I think the GIFs will continue.

And the reason these posts garner the most attention is because they're like a plane crash. At this point we're just waiting for/helping it to hit the ground.
