Title.
I'm not an amazing student, and my knowledge of medicine isnt great. I'm just below avg to an avg student. Is it even worth it to do auditions? I'm not going to stand out as a student, I'm just not that type of student. I'm talking about doing an FM audition specifically btw. I'm afraid that the audition will hurt me because I could pretend I am hard working by staying late, etc, but I am not sure if I am likeable by others or others will be impressed by me. I would like to stay in a specific state that's why I'm asking.

How have you been doing on all your rotations? Been getting good evals, comments? Audition rotations are a 2 edged-sword, it can either help or hurt you tremendously. Depending on the specific state (CA is very competitive), sometimes having a regional tie to a FM program is already half the battle.

Good evals and comments. All A's. I'm talking about matching into a CA FM program.

Good evals, comments, getting along well with people on your rotations all suggest that you will do well on your auditions. Knowledge base should be decent as auditions are done after your Level 2 exam. I say go for it, do a few auditions at a few select programs of your choice. Anything in CA is a lot more competitive unfortunately.
Personally, I feel like audition rotations you are judged more based on your interactions with other people than your knowledge base. Sure being able to get all the pimp questions correctly is impressive but if you come off as an ahole or getting even a bad comment from a patient or staff you are pretty much done for.

Do it. You sound likable from Evals. FM seems to care more about you as a person and your desire for FM than being a rockstar fact machine. The fact you are self aware enough to even question your likeability bodes well for you in my eyes.

I agree with the previous comments. Auditions are an opportunity to impress and to offset what may appear to be shortcomings on paper. Having a vast knowledge base at your stage of the game probably isn't the most important thing. Being personable, teachable, and integrating well with the team will likely carry more weight.

i think being teachable and helpful is more important than knowledge but having a bit of that doesnt hurt. be hardworking and a team player.. as a DO apply very broadly to a lot of programs and you will match. dont get locked into only applying to 10 programs in cali expand your horizons you can always go back to cali after residency
