Hello,

I realize a lot of people could be mean about this but my fiancé got an acceptance at a school we could not imagine staying at for 4 years. The school he has a delayed decision for (likely because of a late application) is the dream school in a perfect location and my job would be able to transfer there. We are torn with the idea of reapplying and turning down an acceptance, even though we do not want to move there. I think the reason he did not get into the dream school was a very late application. Any advice? Anyone else in a similar situation?

Thank you and I appreciate you guys not being upset about me asking this!

You could defer acceptance for a year and reapply. If it doesn't work out, there will still be a spot in the next year's class at the school your SO has already been accepted to. If it doesn't work out 2nd time around, you will have wasted a year and given up 1 yr of physician salary but it will keep you from wondering "what if".

Just be sure to give a legitimate sounding reason for the deferral.

You can potentially defer with a good reason and reapply but that is at a minimum of a $200,000 mistake due to salary, increased tuition, and loan interest rates increasing. I deferred for another reason and regret it. Also you have to state on your application (I think), have you ever accepted a medical school acceptance.

The bigger issue is if you defer and reapply what will be different on the application. This late in the game the only thing you can likely change is the MCAT but it is already June and applications are due soon, and if you apply late with an unchanged application your result will likely not change.

You have a medical school acceptance, if you didn't want to go there you shouldn't have applied, but 1 in the hand is worth 2 in the bush.

We actually did not apply to this campus just the school in general. It is brand new and we just got to see it today.

Call up the school and ask. If they say late application, then you might say "eh it is worth it to try again." But if they say "your MCAT is below the average" and imply that you wouldn't be successful if you tried again, there is your answer.

With it being a delayed decision, we are hoping for an acceptance still, although it keeps seeming like less and less of an option the more time goes on.

Based on what you said, it sounds like your partner probably got into NYIT-Arkansas as they sent out IIs without applicants actually applying and then accepted most of the people they interviewed. NYITCOM did a very sleazy thing and your partner isin't the only person in this odd situation. I believe you have a justifiable reason to not to go to a new school, especially when you didn't even intend on applying.

Your partner should send constant update letters to the school he is wait-listed at and even call the office.

It sucks but if you become a reapplicant after turning down an acceptance, you are very unlikely to even get an interview, because you will have to disclose that your were previously accepted.

The AACOMAS application asks whether you matriculated, not whether you were previously accepted. None of the schools I applied to asked whether I had an acceptance in prior years.
