Can you bring photos to your interview..also is it good to send photos and videos along with your secondary application?

I was also thinking about showing a DVD of myself during the interview, I have one of those portable DVD players...Can I do it?

They want to hear you talk. Anyone can look good after editing, etc.

On a scale of 1 to 10 (ten being great idea, one being terrible idea), I give this a -3.14

I hear it worked wonders for Paris Hilton. Just make sure you've got good lighting.

I asked this same question. They need more context to understand the question.

I want to bring a small clip on my pda, or even pictures, of a 20 foot tall catapult I built launching stuff. Words just don't do something like this justice.

Now if you are thinking of just bringing a video of something you could just as easly show or talk about, yeah, that's a bad idea.

I have not interviewed yet, but feel that there exist situations that merit bringing a photo or clip. I think I'll bring it anyway, and just throw it out there that I brought pictures or a clip "if you wanna see it."

That's the dumbest thing I've ever heard.

Seriously...can you think up anything more ridiculous to pull in an interview...this isn't show and tell...and its not nam there are rules here...

this is really an awful idea....the portable dvd player part being the worst. it would be like going to the interview in a clown suit....or going drunk haha

I'm the type of person who feels like absolute **** if I think I've hurt someone's feelings, but my initial reaction to your idea is that it seems a bit arrogant. I'd be careful doing that. (And I hope I didn't just hurt your feelings). But what do *we* know? If I were you, I'd ask a dean of admissions.

Why did you build a 20-foot catapult? The neighbors across town must have really pissed you off huh?

Heck, I'm no interviewer but I'd like to see a pic.

This is an interview. I've never heard of an interview where you walk in, play a DVD, and then say "any questions?"

Heck, why not just mail the DVD or have it delivered to the admissions office the day of the interview with a note that they can call you if there are any questions following your "presentation" of yourself.

Ok, that's enough sarcasm. Sorry. 🙁 But really - this is an opportunity for them to see YOU. To talk with YOU and get to know YOU. I think showing a DVD is a really really *really* bad idea. You can always offer to send it later. I wouldn't want to waste the time I have to show off who *I* am and convince them to admit me by showing a video.

Yeah, they want to get to know you as a person, not you through a video. If this is actually a serious idea, I say forget it. They'd much rather hear you talk about your experiences in person than watch them on a video.

Unless it's a DVD of you in bed with the dean, I doub't there is any way this would be helpful to your chances. 🙄

If anything send the photos and DVD before interviewing just to get the adcom aroused...the interview should focus more on actually bl0wing the interviewers.

why bother with a dvd player and all that?

As a matter of fact, why bother with anything at all? Forget wearing a nice suit, doing your hair, looking presentable. ****, why not just forget about actually preparing for the interview.

Just go in there and say 2 words:

"Wanna f*ck?"

you are set.

Seriously gottamakeit - you've been posting off the wall/bizarre questions for less than a month and have accumulated over 50 posts in that short time, yet apparently you haven't even started college yet. http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=270873
My suggestion: chill ~

Ohh...nice find. That makes this thread even that much more ridiculous. 🙂 But yeah, seriously, if you're this early on in the process, stop worrying about the interviews. Just work on getting good grades and good experiences.

haha. He/she probably won't even make it past 2nd year of college without changing his/her career plans!!

Assuming he is not a troll. He'll probably burn out even before he starts college.

hi gottamakeit,

ignore what others say about your question.
there is no such thing call "stupid or dumb question."
at least, you're learning something. that's how you grow and learn. 🙂

you guys,

it is just a question. don't bring a person that down.

HAHAHA. this idea has unleashed the fury of all SDNers. i was nervous about bringing a copy of my publication to interviews, but this... this takes the cake.

You: I built a 20 foot catapult. Want to see?
Interviewer: Huh? Wha...

I know you've been told to try and distinguish yourself from the class by showing outside interests, but you have to be weary of bordering on being a wierdo.

I don't think the DVD thing is a good idea, but I too thought about bringing pictures -- I don't think it detracts at all because pictures you have to explain.

Anyway, that's my two cents.

???!!!

Pictures of what though? You in a 3rd world country on a foreign medical mission.... sounds great. You next a to a large wooden contraption designed to sling boulders far distances to knock down castle walls.... not so great.

I've read some strange things from the bizarre interview moments thread, but still would recommend NOT bringing along a portable DVD player to the interview day. This will make you stick out in a bad way, not a good way.

At the most, bring a folder with pictures if there is something in particular you think they will want to see. And don't show them the pictures unless you get into a discussion about that topic. Then ask them if they'd like to see them first.

If you still feel the need to show them some video and they show interest during the interview then upload the file on the net and send them an e-mail link to the file when you get home.

Don't feel bad about all the negative comments. Once you go to your first interview, you'll realize how silly you would look whipping out a DVD player, dimming the lights, and "presenting" your experiences. Im laughing to myself just thinking of the spectacle.

Actually, depending on the rapport you establish with your interviewer, a situation like Ownage Mobile's might not be out of line. If you have a short video of something cool you have done, it's in a format where you can whip it out real quick to show the interviewer, and the interviewer seems genuinely interested in your accomplishment, then I say go for it.

For example, if you're into martial arts and can do that nifty thing where you run up the wall and do a backflip off of it, it would be cool to be able to show the interviewer that. BUT, don't steer the conversation towards that end...just let it flow naturally and if your interview has that kind of "bulls**t session" feel that some interviews can take on, you could show the vid if it comes up.

"what's that, you're interested in my martial arts training? well, funny you should say that because it just so happens that I have my good ole' faithful DVD player in my pocket. Gimme a sec while I fix 'er up here."

If we're going to go with the whole prop thing, I'm just gonna bring in my dad. He's got lots of good things to say about me and I wouldn't have to do all the bragging myself.

my advice is to set up a mobile HDTV widescreen. You could hook it up to a little generator, set it all on a cart, and wheel it in. Then sit down and casually wait for the "right moment" to bust it out your tree flipping/catapult/inappropriate behavior with cow in high def. If you could get 6.1 going you'd be my hero.

I also got something cool that I can whip out real quick and that the interviewer will DEF be interested in

but you don't see me trying to choke it down someones throat (a-ha!)

give the dvd player idea a rest.

Better idea - bring the catapult with you, and demonstrate it to your interviewers by lobbing a black plague corpse from the infectious diseases department to the medieval history department.

If you want a psychiatrist to be one of your interviewers, tell them of this plan beforehand.

Dude, you are missing the point here.

It's one thing to jump on the bandwagon and post another wise crack about a silly post, but it would do you good to understand the underlying concepts here before attempting to shoot the $hit with the boys.

Why not just send them a link to your myspace page and blow off the interview altogether? 👍

^^^ This is why it depends on what you want to show the interviewer.

I'll work on getting a pic up for you Rayhan, they all happen to be in America, which makes it difficult for me here in China.

I built it because I like building and designing things, history, high energy machines, and balistics, oh oh oh no wait, and "helping people." It was built a good distance away from other houses, and was 45 feet tall with the arm extended vertically.

Mine wasn't quite as intricate, but you get the idea.
