I want to leave all personal bias out of this so… Assuming all factors are the same (cost, proximity to home, etc), which is objectively a better medical school to attend? I'm hoping to match into a competitive, non-primary care speciality. would love any input/advice!

Jefferson has shockingly good departments in pretty much every surgical subspecialty, and that would improve your access to research and connections that could make matching easier.

Ophtho, ortho, and ENT = Jefferson by a mile. Jefferson might as well be Harvard to an ophthalmologist. Neurosurgery is also better at Jefferson. However, Jeff does not have plastics or integrated thoracic, while Rochester does. Personally, I’d go with Jefferson unless you are set on plastics.

How are the research opportunities at Jefferson/SKMC compared to Rochester?

Couldn’t tell you as I don’t know Rochester very well. I guess that it’s a good name, but kind of a regional one like a Utah or UAB.

Looks like Jefferson wins at urology as well. About equal for surgery, rads, anesthesia, and derm.

Since you got two ophtho folks responding, I would put Jefferson’s department/training above Harvard having interviewed at both and knowing plenty of grads.
