i was curious about this... i've seen it lightly touched in other topics, but never thoroughly discussed.

once you have gotten an interview, i'm assuming the quality of the applicants will be very similar. in that sense, your academic stas are equal since you all have been granted the interview. now how do the admissions committees then choose from that applicant pool??

will the interview really do that much to get you in? how big of a weight does the LORs, interview, essay play at the level?

gavin - you've had some experience interviewing applicants... do you have any insight on this?

don't you wish you had someone on an admissions comittee at your beck and call to answer these questions? =)

Gavin can probably offer more insight, but from what ive heard and my own experience, everybody that gets interviewed is very qualified, and the school is obviously interested in you. Therefore, I think that the interview can do more to get you rejected/waitlisted (if you screw it up pretty badly, or have no social skills) than it can to get you in.

Yeah, everybody who makes it to the interview is well qualified.

I think from that point a lot of it is simply a crapshoot. It depends on the people you interview with. It depends on what type of day those adcom members are having.

It may even depend on whether you are their first or last interview of the day.

LORs and personal essay play a great role here at 'Zona.

The answers to the questions asked in interview also play a great role here.

The direct answer to this question is nearly impossible to pin down. There are just TOO many factors (both on the applicant's side and the interviewer's side) to say that XXX will get you an acceptance.

But, I can tell you that interviews ARE very signifigant. On average I'd say you have a 50% chance for admittance if you get an interview. Those who don't make the cut are probably those who looked good enough on paper to get an interview, but were lethargic and full of canned answers during the interviews.

I am gonna take a guess here. But I would say unless you stand out greatly in the interview, whether positively or negatively, your chance of admission will only be affected by that. Other than that, the interview is just a formality to get to know the student and show you their school.

If you just had a "run of the mill" interview, then the decision will go down to GPA/DAT scores/LOR's/ extracur's.

So, moral of the story, if you have marginal stats, knock em dead on the interview. If you have great stats, don't screw up the interview.

Be yourself. If you are boaring, admit it. If you are the life of the party, try to keep it under control but go with it.

We have all types of people in our classes, the interview is a chance to see if what you put on paper is what they really see.

Try and sleep the night before and just be yourself. Hey, it is only the rest of your life hanging in the ballance.🙂
