What's the correct way to double glove? I'm a newly minted MS3 on surgery (loving it so far), and in the past three weeks, I've been told at least three different "gold standards" of double gloving. Just curious which you all think is the most popular/comfortable.

Survey questions not clear...

What I do:
Either same size for both, or 1/2 size bigger than my size on the inside.
Non-latex no powder on inside, powdered latex on outside. (cheaper and slides over gloves easier.)

Sorry for the confusion. Maybe an example will make it more clear:

If I'm exactly a 6.5, then option A would be a 7 over a 7.5, option B would be a 6.5 over a 7, and option C would be a 7 over a 6.5. Personally, like Goldilocks, I'm torn between A (a little too loose) and B (a little too snug). C was just... weird, but it seems popular. I guess I'll try same size for both next time. 🙂

Thanks for the responses!

Here are my thoughts:
It depends on what brand you are wearing. some brands are tighter than others. As a general rule, the roomier glove goes on the inside so that it doesn't slip off while working (if the outer glove is too big relative to the inner glove, it will slide and you'll end up with the glove fingertips off your real fingers making precision difficult. Thus, I use +0.5 inside, normal outside. Occasionally I have to bump everything up the outer 0.5 as well if all they have are the extra thick ortho gloves for the inside

I also recommend using two different colors whenever possible (i.e. brown or green on the inside, white on the outside so it is obvious when you puncture your outer glove.

I agree with most of the comments, +0.5 on the inside and normal size on the outside. This hopefully avoids the tingling finger sensation. I also wear the indicator gloves on the inside to help visualize holes in the outside glove. Larger outside gloves I think would tend to slip when tying.

Try several different brands and types. We have biogels at the university hospital. The regular and M type supposedly fit differently, and the M's have tiny nubbins that may or may not help with grip. The scub nurses may be the ones to ask, as they glove and deglove much more frequently than surgeons.

they told us to wear +0.5 size inside and the real size outside. so i do 8 indicators on the inside and 7.5 biogels on the outside. like others have said, when i used to wear ortho gloves or Ms on the outside theyd fit differently. it takes a little while to figure out what works best for you.

great poll. I was just thinking about this the other day -- of course was too tired to think of asking it here. I don't routinely doubleglove, though I think I'm going to start.

8 inside, 7.5 outside for me. Biogels. I don't always double-glove (I usually get that tingly/numb feeling after a couple hours), but I got my first needle-stick last week, so maybe I'll start from now on. 🙂

I've been stuck at least 3-4 times now. You can expect to get stuck about once every year or two.

Yeah, that's what the attendings tell me. It sucks, though. Calling Employee Health and waiting for them to come down to file a report and draw blood...endless waiting...

When I double glove, I wear same: 8 indicator/ 7.5 outer regular biogels; sometimes if i single glove i just wear a 7.5 indicator b/c the "feel" at the
fingertips is better.

A random note: when i was doing sub-I @ chapel hill last year, they made a big deal NOT to wear biogels b/c they were so expensive-like eight bucks a pair. anyone have any idea as to the price of a pair of biogels?

hmm... try this...

Snag a few brands/sizes of gloves from the OR. Glove in different ways and practice with your handy knot board. Use whatever seems to work best.

sheepskin on the inside, ribbed latex +/- french tickler on the outside...

Hi there,
My regular size glove is 7.5. When I double glove, I geneally put an 8.0 on the inside and a 7.5 on the outside. Beware of different glove types though, you should experiment with them. In some glove types, I find that I need 8.O and 8.5 if I double glove. I also try not to ever use powdered gloves.

njbmd 🙂

8 biogel on the inside 7.5 white on the outside or simply a 7.5 biogel. The non-latex (blue) biogels are spectacular (feel great, better than reg biogel), but cost like 5x as much.

I prefer it when the gloves are wet - much easier to tie than when they're sticky (with blood).
