can i ask a stupid question?

whats the difference between an MD and DO in how one practices medicine

and if there isnt any difference, why is there such a negative stigma on DOs

the reason i ask is cause i was told by family, that DO school would be a good backup if MD school didnt work out, and i didnt think that was fair to place assumptions that DO schools are "backup plans" for people that dont get into MD schools.

IMHO not a hell of a lot. This I found out through tons and tons of shadowing MD's and DO's. There are differences but they are minute in my opinion. The main differences come in perceptions of premeds, uber competeive residencies, and non medical people.

I don't see too much negative except from premeds that have to have someone to look down on. Its a philosophy difference and a little OMT added in. Its not for those that go into medicine wanting people to gush over their initials and swan over the school they went to. its for people honestly interested in quality medicine and I'll say it again...

Its the person that makes the doctor not so much the school.

You just have to search...observe...shadow...and determine where you want to go to school. Everyone has their nitche.

No lie...some people do use it as a backup...cause they get into the residency they want with an ass load of hard work and good networking skills. I personally went before last year thinking DO as an alternative..then I shadowed and realized I liked it a lot. When I got my interviews I went to them...and then ranked them in order of where I wanted to go...I have a link at the bottom of my posts but I ended up raking a MD first (due to tuition and clinicals) and a DO second (again tuition, clinicals, and location)..then so on and so forth.

I used this boards a guide....your going to get extremes on each end. Its up to you to get off your butt and go out there and check it out. I highly suggest it. I shadowed...and observed...and picked up a phone and called and called people to talk to them about the profession.

I recommend that you continue to do what your doing....keep reading...keep learning..and find out what is best for you. Good luck!

Since you're new to SDN, stupid questions will be answered. But look on top of the website, there is a button saying "search". Click on that and you then type in DO vs. MD and you will get your question answered there. It's a great source in case you didn't realize it is there.
