Silly Rotations Question

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I know this is probably a silly question, but do MS3's work on weekends during their rotations?

Depends on the particular rotation. On trauma surgery, I worked 6 days a week, 14 hours a day (more when I was on call, clearly). On ENT, my days are no shorter, really, but I do not work weekends. I won't work weekends on psych, I will work 6 days a week on medicine. Some services have you do one weekend call, and then you get the rest of the weekends off for that rotation.

In sum, prepare to work harder than you've ever worked in your life, prepare to realize that what you do is NOTHING compared to what the interns/residents do, and prepare to pay for the privilege.

There may be some rotations when you don't have to work on the weekends (e.g. psych), but for the most part, expect to at least round on Saturday or Sunday.

As others have said, many places require at least some weekend work, and some have periodic weekend call (you come in Friday or Saturday morning and don't leave until the following morning). It's a rough year -- I wouldn't bank on having much free time on the more intense rotations apart from vacations.
