Simple Question about Research

When someone says, "Research is one of my ECs for Dental School." What in the world are they talking about? How do you do "Research"? What are they researching?"

When most talk about research, they're most likely referring to academic research.

Some of these include:
basic science
clinical
applied
educational

So how do you start Research? Do you go up to a teacher and say, "I want to do some research."

That approach might not be effective because that particular teacher might not do research, or if they do have a lab they might be looking for people who are interested in their field, like cancer or immunology. If you really want to do research try approaching a professor who's class you really like after you've made a A's on the first couple of exams.

Yeah! Give them a dramatic, yet confident wink too, to let them know you're serious. 😉

Sorry but the wording made me laugh, lol! Go up after class and slowly get to know them. Ask them relevant questions to lectures to demonstrate interest and look up their research to eventually ask them about it. If you ask a prof whom you don't know, don't be surprised if they say no. Having undergrads in the lab takes time and money to train, and they need to know you're a serious student.

I'm starting my junior year at Pitt as a biology major and am doing research for the first time this summer. It's a full-time, paid position.

Here's what I did: I went to the biology department's website and looked through all of the professors that are currently doing research (whether I had that professor or not). I emailed the professors whose research interested me. I sent out 9 emails and tailored them to that particular professor and what interested me about what they were doing. I heard back right away from 3 whose labs were full. I met with two of them who had positions available in their labs and went with the one that interested me the most. The rest I never heard from.

The two that I met with wanted a resume and a description of what my career goals were.

from my experience.... about 95% of dental schools out there don't care about research.... GPA+DAT is about 95% of ur application (the other 5% being shadowing, volunteering and other ecs).

Some people send mass emails. Some got to know one of their professors and asked to join their lab. Some have connections. Some are invited to the lab by their professor.
