Is anyone aware of a list of all the dental schools that have simulation labs? I have searched extensively to no avail.

Not sure, but VCU has about 25 DentSim machines. I hear some other schools that had 5-6 machines cancelled because they were too hard to maintain, but VCU brought in someone specifically to keep the Sim Lab up and running. I think it was a really big asset to our first semester curriculum.

Which other schools have them? I'm not sure. Probably quite a few.

all three texas schools have a complete sim lab with about 90 or so operatories that have the manakins

It depends on what type of sim lab you're talking about. Penn, VCU, I think Case, and a few others have the dentsim system. This is a computer system that measures your drilling accuracy to the millimeter. But there are other schools, like Michigan, UCLA, etc., that have newer sim labs, with monitors and manikin heads at each station, but without the elaborate computer system. Some people swear by the new DentSim technology, but it wasn't enough to convince me to go to Penn over UCLA.

BU and NYU, both, have the newer sim labs (with manikins). Tufts will not have a sim lab for at least one year, due to their construction plans. However, they do have a pre clinical lab. I've always thought of pre clinical labs as being more essential than sim labs.

I don't remember seeing a pre clinical lab at BU, though. NYU had one.

The University of Minnesota just added a new lab last year. Their website has videos and you can tour it as well.

Columbia has like the smallest simlab ever (like 3 machines) that i havent seen since my interview 2+ years ago...i heard the lady who ran the simlab left so now its there laying dormant.

It better be quite a bit more accurate than that if it has any value at all.

Maybe it's to the fraction of a millimeter??.......I don't know I've never actually used one. I guess it's also meant to force good posture and ergonomics by using motion sensors which turn off the drill if you're not seated properly. Either way, it won't be a part of my pre-doctoral education.

What's the difference between a simulation lab and a pre-clinic lab other than the technology? So an example of sim lab : tufts, pitt, umd and example of pre-clinic lab – buffalo?

So is pre-clinic just where we'll practice on a set of teeth on a stick in a lab and not in a fancy technology updated mannequin?

Don't we have to do either of these in the first two years of Dschool to prep for clinic?

It must be. I was just thinking about this today, specifically what I thought was a small measurement before I got to dental school. I specifically remember having a project with a certain measurement being 1mm, and having a tough time actually removing so much tooth structure. 😀

Haha, well it looks like my compulsiveness will fit in perfectly with Dentistry

The Computerized DentSim training stations usually measure by the fraction of the milimeters. I remember Nova has like 8 of them. Nova also has a Pre-clinical Simulation Lab with mannequin heads and all. I think USC also had these mannequin head pre-clinical sim labs, but no DentSim. I'm trying hard to remember if UNLV had anything, but I don't remember it having any of that. But it was a long time ago.

Pacific has exactly what Armor mentioned.

Oh, and Maryland has a brand new pre-clinical Sim Lab...and I hate them for it cause I hear it is really nice.

UOP's has the best view 🙂

Maryland has planmeca fitted simulation labs, each station customized with a flat panel monitor.

jb!🙂
