I feel that if I compare myself to my peers at my university, I'll have an almost guaranteed shot into dental school. But if I compare myself to the SDN peers, I feel that I have an decent shot. I know that there is an obvious disparity between most students at most schools and SDNer's. But does anyone else feel that the gap seems a little to wide at their school?

My school's ranked like 143 on U.S. News so maybe that's why I feel the disparity but how about you guys?

Yeah I know how you feel, I usually have the highest grade in every class I take. But my school is for the average joe. They accept around 45% of applicants lol... When people see my exam scores, they just look at me different. Its like I don't fit in there.

Dont let them see your exams if you know they will look at you different.

I usually "degrade" myself and tell people that I got 79 or a low B. I do this based on some bad experiences in the past 🙂

You never know what people think. Life is full of surprises.

lol u guys are funnies

Yeah I know how you guys feel, I usually have the biggest penis in every class I take. But my school is for the average joe. When people see my penis, they just look at me different. Its like I don't fit in there. I usually "degrade" myself and tell people that I'm not that big. I do this based on some bad experiences in the past.

I don't see why everyone is busting this guy's chops and implying that he's bragging or something. He openly admitted to going to a school ranked outside the top 50...forget outside of even the top 100...#143..he's clearly not bragging about anything.

Dude,

If you have nothing to do, go and find a man to satisfy your desire or something because you seem like you enjoy penis much more than everyone else on here.

By no mean I was showing off. I never think about it when I hit the "send" button. My GPAs arent that high either.

No wonder your name is red.

Is there really a need for homophobia on SDN? Couldn't you have just said "someone else to satisfy your desire"? And I thought it sounded a little braggy too. Like saying you're too good for your school or something.

Ok,

No point of fighting with someone over the internet. end of discussion here.

Sounds pretty rough

Huh, I must be lost. I thought this was a student doctor network forum... not a teenie bopper chatroom. One would expect that people hoping to be in the well-respected profession of dentistry would act the part, at least to a degree greater than what is shown here.

You'd be amazed at the break room convos of private practices

If dentists can't laugh at penis jokes I'm going to have to change fields.

I feel ya, Stacker.

Only overachievers take the time to find a dental forum online and become an active member.

We might feel smarter/have better grades than the average Joe's at our school, but compared to SDN (overachiever population), we are the average Joes.

If people like you with 4.0s are average joes then only the dudes with 7.0s are overachievers.

I know a few with 7.0's

My EC's aren't nearly as good as SDN'ers.
Probably my DAT scores won't be as good either.

That's why I can consider myself an average Joe 😀

If you've got the brains to pull off 4.0s... I'm sure you'll do fine on your DAT.

I am pretty sure that professionals, in all disciplines, laugh at crude jokes, say words like s**t and f**k, and talk about sex. And every once in a while, they might see an R rated movie like the "Hangover".

These are things that happen in the real world. Just because you are a professional or doctor, doesn't mean these things don't happen anymore.

Not to mention... we are not professionals yet, we are a bunch of kids in college. The expectations can't be set to high.

Oh man this is the epitome of why i still visit the pre-dental forums the lol's i get from here are priceless. Froggbuster you make my day.

Yeah I had one really bad experience. I got a 98% on my Political Science midterm and the class average was around a 74% with 57 students. The prof used the name "98 Percent" to address me during classroom conversations. He even asked me during class what I did to score that high.

The test was mainly about 4684798 court cases. All I had to do was memorize the names of all the court cases and I was golden. I thought it was easy rote memorization.😴😴😴😴

I could tell there were some jealous students because of the things they said. I guess the average person at my school is just different than the average person on SDN.

I'm sure active SDN population represents less than 5% of the total applicant pool, so don't worry brother.

Agreed.

To each their own I suppose. I can't imagine that patients would see these things as positive qualities. Then again, a certain number of people may not necessarily see them as negative. In any case, if I owned a practice right now, this wouldn't fly in my office. I guess that's the beauty of owning your own practice--you get to set the rules and find people to work for you who share the same views and value the same rules of conduct.

Basically, I agree with you that such things surely happen, but I would hesitate to say it has a positive effect on your practice, and in fact likely has a negative effect.

i am surprised by the level of hostility toward penis jokes in this thread.

The DAT is the great equalizer. If you have a 4.0 and can only score an 18AA, then adcoms would probably think there's huge grade inflation at your school.

Partially true, but there's a flip-side in that if you have a 3.0 and score a 21, it may just mean you crammed well for the DAT and didn't internalize much of the information throughout your undergraduate career.

A 21 doesn’t make up for a 3.0 imo

I’d think you need more like a 23 or even higher to balance well.

Again, this is purely my opinion and I’m NOT an adcom.

I don't think anything makes up for GPA tbh.

I feel the sdn crowd isnt any worse than the pre health crowd in college. I remember taking pre reqs with all the pre meds in class just destroying curves like goddamn robots.

Or just a crappy test taker

I personally do not believe in this. It is probably the inflation at your school if a 4.0 student cannot pull off a 20+ on DAT.

Exactly what I do, even with my friends. I recently got a perfect score on my Ecology exam, but told my friends I got a B+ just so I wouldn't get judged by them.

Wrong, you still got judged.

They judged that you were a B+ student....

Even with your friends, really? Or maybe I'm confused about other people's definitions of "friends".

I wasn't suggesting that it does. I don't believe even a 23 would make up for a 3.0, at least in my mind it doesn't, for the reason I just stated previously. My point was that the DAT is not really an equalizer at all, since it's just like any other test that you can cram for ahead of time. Sure, it may take a month or two of cramming instead of a day or two, but it's cramming nonetheless. On the other hand, achieving a 4.0 isn't something you can do in a month or two. In my opinion, your GPA is a far better representation of your intellect and understanding than your DAT. We're talking 3-4 years of effort vs. 1-4 months typically.

I think GPA is more a measure of work ethic than intelligence. I know a lot of really smart people with GPAs lower than mine. I would say the DAT is a better measure of actual intelligence because regardless of how many days you study for it, you need to be smart to remember all the details and do well on the test.

You don't believe certain people are crappy test takers? I know on timed tests I get really nervous and can't concentrate as well. Plus I'm a semi-slow reader 🙄 But hopefully by the time I take the DAT I'll of had plenty time practicing with the time limit it won't affect me.

Different colleges to me are a lot like high school cafeteria. You've got the table for jocks who generally, not always, go to lower-tier schools/C-College. Those schools are then generally saturated with jock-types. (Jocks: Do not consider them bad though the word carries a negative connotation; they just have different values than some) You move on to a different table, say, the above average students with normal social skills and they tend to move onto relatively competitive schools. Then you've got the nerd table, which is typically hard to predict what school they tend to go to. They can be the types of nerds who play video games and watch cartoons/anime all day and have an uncommon set of social skills or ambition and they can tend to go to O.K.-competetive schools or community college. The other range of nerds are the academically oriented who obviously go to prestigious schools.

I happened to have sat at the wrong table and gone to wrong school. Oh wells.

You will be fine. There is no way you will score lower than a 20.

My school is ranked 19th in the world by The Times Higher Education and has 50000 students. There is no humanly possible way to close the gap at my school. It's always there. :scared:
