Catchy title .... thats about it.

Man, sure does seem 'Anesthesia' is the HOT topic of interest this go around. Anyone else noticing this? I feel like 30% of my class wants in. Any residency programs noticing this with a sudden influx beyond normal?

Regardless ... I wish them all luck!

No, not any different than it has been for the past 5 years. And, the general caliber of applicants as evidenced by the current med students I've seen, with rare exception, has been exactly what MilMD has alluded to before...

Ok thought maybe I was just seeing it from a new perspective is all. PS -- your sizzle was better. So what does MilMed have to say about the current set of recruits...

I read some of his stuff, but didnt see anything directly relating to the new people applying.

copro, while i don't pretend to actually believe that board scores make the physician, or candidate, there is evidence that Step I scores for anes IS going up. so, one could make the arguement that at least newer applicants are perhaps working harder, no?

Just finishing up an OB/Gyn rotation, I've had the pleasure of interacting with a good number of our programs anes residents. If attitude and personal skills is any indication, I think these guys are gonna be assets to the field. I've met some top notch dudes.

I'm out of touch with the med stud generation, but this is what I would like to see:

1) MUCH fewer applicants

that's about it.

Much fewer apps ... nice. Why would you want that? Not able to sort through them to find the good ones? Or too much of a headache when sorting to find the good ones?

I would think more would allow for a better cast and crew.

I think we have too many anesthesiologists.....

and too few good ones.

The data I'm looking at:

2005, US Seniors matching in anesthesiology: Mean Step 1 = 216, % AOA = 6
2007, US Seniors matching in anesthesiology: Mean Step 1 = 220, % AOA = 7.5

Not that big of a difference if you ask me.

i would also like an increase in good looking female applicants as well, preferably at least for the 2010 match

Not big at all, but significant, right? Does anybody know what the Mean Step 1 score was for ALL US Seniors? If it increased by an amount in relation to anesthesia, then yes this increase is not significant. But if it did not increase by this much, then wouldn't you consider this increase for anes pretty significant?

I'm pretty sure the mean score increased by about the same amount during that time period. I agree that it's not significant.

This "talk" seems to go around every year about this time. I don't really think the competitiveness has changed over the past few years though.

Data not available for 2005, but I think the mean Step 1 was 215 (or so).

2007, US Seniors matching in any specialty: Mean Step 1 = 221, % AOA = 14

A lot of brouhaha about increasing competitiveness of a still-less-than-average specialty.

NOW do you believe me?
