Hi guys,

I'm trying to get a summer research opportunity at a great research institute with a neurology professor. The interview is over Skype. I have past research experience in neuroscience.

I just want to get a general idea of what I need to do to prepare for this.

1) I should probably shave and wear a suit and tie?

2) What sort of things should I expect to talk about in this interview? Is it really just them trying to get to know me?

Thanks

1. I would treat this like an in person interview. Don't think you need nice pants but if it puts you into the professional mindset I would. You don't want to come across looking like a slob.

2. When I was going through research interviews - they ALWAYS asked about my past research experience. ALWAYS. I would know your old research inside out, and be able to explain it well.

It doesn't hurt to know a bit about their research as well but most of the time they'll sit there and explain it to you to fill the time. Though the people that I've interviewed have gotten bonus points for knowing what our work was ahead of time.

Be relaxed, but professional. Not shaving/looks like you just rolled out of bed = no no. Would you hire you if you looked like that and your ideal candidate was someone that seemed sharp, would work hard and was interested in the research?
