I’m interested in doing a sleep medicine fellowship after neurology residency but also enjoy reading EEGs. I’m thinking of doing a split neuro and sleep practice. Have you heard of practices that would allow one to do both sleep and read EEGs, and would I need to do an additional fellowship in clinical neurophysiology?

You would definitely need extra training in CNP given that a typical sleep study has...what, 4 leads of EEG? Does not translate to interpretation of an EEG with a full montage.

True. Do you think one could get reasonably proficient with reading EEGs during residency by using elective time and making an effort to review as many EEGs as possible? Are there people who read EEGs, for instance in private practice, that did not go through fellowship? We get 2 months of clinical neurophysiology, plus EMU and epilepsy rotations, as well as additional electives for EEG reading.

With extra effort in residency and fellowship, you can probably learn enough EEG to read them. Esp if you are in private practice or non academic small/mid size hospitals. Wont be good enough for a large hospital/department or an academic program.
