Did anyone else on here get rejected from Western University, only to get an email from the dean of the dental school inviting you to apply to their podiatry program? I thought it was pretty rude and unprofessional.

I took it as: "We have rejected you from our dental program, but would like your help in filling our empty and unpopular podiatry program. You're application obviously lacked passion in dentistry and we assume that your only goal in life is to somehow be involved in the health field, even if that means studying a profession you have shown no previous interest in."

If someone from Western is reading this, I'd seriously reconsider your recruitment tactics for your podiatry program.

wooooooooooooow that's a slap in the face. Ignore it and move on because that's all you can do. This should give you the motivation to reapply and get into a better school. Good Luck

It looks like the OP has already been admitted.

@ OP: This just proves that dental schools don't communicate with one another, because if they did, they would have known that you were already accepted to UoP.

Yeah that is pretty rude. That makes our school look unprofessional especially when they stress professionalism here like crazy.

I was rejected from MWU-IL in October, and then received and email from them Dec. 5th-ish about applying to their masters program.. I took that as a slap in the face😡.. I wasnt trying to do a masters. Made me want to call them and tell them about my other D School offer so I could do one of these to them:laugh:

It seems like schools try so hard to stress that they want to see your commitment to the field through shadowing, etc... why would they even suggest you just hop on over to a new field? That's incredibly strange. I would apply just to see if you could get in 😎

Which slap hurt worst- being rejected or being invited to look at feet instead of teeth?

I feel like being invited to do a masters wouldn't be as bad. At least that seems like they're trying to get you to improve your credentials. I have plenty of friends who have pursued dentistry after getting a masters. Podiatry is a COMPLETELY different professional field all together! I hate to say this, but it makes Western seem like a joke.

They could take a lesson in rejection from UPenn. UPenn's rejection letter made me feel really good. Seriously...

"The decision of the Admissions Selection Committee in no way reflects on you as a person, on you as a student, or on your school. Our decision is not a denial of your motivation or potential to become a dentist, but more truly reflects the extreme competition and increased quality of the applicant pool this year. May we remind you that no one has yet perfected the art of human assessment and that you can prove by your own achievements in the years ahead how very shortsighted our Committee was by not selecting you to interview for our program."

Now that's class.

Thats just silly 🙄

You should call and ask "If I apply to your feet program and you reject me, will you direct me to your dental school?"

You really can't compare the schools. It would be like comparing a Ferrari Convertible to a Mazda Miata. They are on different levels, and with different levels, comes different class. 😛

UPENN HAS THE BEST REJECTION LETTER, if there was an away for the best rejection, UPENN would win it. We should make an SDN awards, someone make a poll.haha. Worst rejection, and Best rejection.haha

Yikes! How weird, especially since they are HUGE on professionalism at Western (which is what is keeping me from making remarks in response to some snarky comments on this thread about my school haha). Spud Daddy, do you know who we could talk to on campus to find out more about why they would send something like this out and let them know about the response it is getting?

Gosh it almost makes one happy to be rejected.

Well it works to UPenn's benefit as well. I may have been rejected now, but who knows if I'll pursue a specialty program there in the future. Although, I was rejected, with this letter, they have left a very pleasant feeling of professionalism and maturity.

I hate to burn bridges, but with Western, I couldn't care less about what happens at that school. They have left me with an unsophisticated, disordered, unprofessional image of their school and program. If I were to pursue a specialty program, I probably wouldn't apply there... oh wait. 😉

nah don't say that. Don't take things personal. Its foolish of them to direct a quality applicant in the opposite direction of dentistry (literally).

You never know in the future, they could have an amazing specialty program that feels like a perfect fit for you. Never burn bridges.

Looks like an acceptance would be a pretty good antidote for the "unsophisticated, disordered, unprofessional image"

You're right. I should be more impeccable with my word. Thanks for the reminder. =)

besides, they've probably been called by now by a few rejectees and had their world cussed out lmao. F-bombs and the whole nine yards.

C'mon now. Don't be ridiculous Rainee.

To the OP: you can't take this stuff personally. I remembered when I was rejected by Loma Linda in a crappy way and there were threads on how Loma Linda was classless. Now that I am actually in dental school, I realize that Loma Linda has a good program. Maybe the same will happen to you when you are actually in the grind and don't have time to be offended over things like this. I doubt you got an interview because if you did you would feel much differently about the school. Anyways, you are accepted to a great program and I wish you luck.

To Just Peachy, I think there is definitely someone I can talk to about this which is another benefit of going to a new school, you can actually talk to people and make changes for improvement and get quicker results or answers.

Classy but a nice big run on sentence....

It seems obvious that the school is trying to generate some $$$ by trying to convince some people to apply to and attend the podiatry program. Overall, it is unprofessional and reflects on the poor decision making skills of the management involved in sending this out.

haha that's a joke.. whoever signed the flyer was a dds– shame on them!

I would do the same as dentalWorks.. I would call them up and ask if I apply to their pod school, will they direct me back to the dental school where I freakin belong!

My favorite rejection of this year came from marquette. I got a rejection letter, then 2 months later got a letter saying they were reconsidering me.....? Then last week I once again got another rejection letter. Was a tad confused by this but w/e.

as for my worst though, it would have to be nova. I received no notification whatsoever. I called numerous times last year and never once got a straight answer.

I received the same one from Midwestern as another poster said. I thought it was strange. I too was accepted at a different school so I wanted to be like "hey thanks but no thanks because I'm already attending ____" I just got an email from them this AM asking if I would tell my pre-dental friends about their pre-dental clinical simulation courses. I probably will forward this since I am still involved in the pre-dental club, but found it a little strange that they'd ask me after being rejected.

Hahaha.. I like how it says "you may have already met 90% of the requirements.." you're almost there! YOU CAN DO IT!

I wish it was that easy to make life changing decisions

I gotta admit, I would be offended if I got that letter from Western 👎

I received that letter as well. I think I'm going to be biased against that school for quite a while.

Damn you Pomona!!!

Anyone ever wonder if POD is akin to dentistry 10-15 years ago?

What I mean is a profession that is flying under the radar but it compensates well.

That is exactly what I think. They get paid very well , and its relatively easy to gain admissions to their schools. Avg DAT is about an 18, MCAT is about a 22-23. BUT I think the admission standards will increase soon.

Maybe. But compensation isn't a big motivating factor for me. Neither is trying to find the "fastest track to a career in surgery."

Some of the POD schools do accept the DAT. It would be an easy transition if the applicant wasn't completely set on dentistry.

hahahahah LAME.

This is what happens when you get for-profit in education.

Unlike dental, however, pods have a mandatory 3 year residency to make what a recent dental grad would.

And little to no autonomy. And a lot more insurance BS.

i got this email when i was still waiting to hear back from them like two months ago. i was so pissed off, that i replied where i basically yelled at them (in a professional and well-composed way) and then told them to pull my files because i wouldn't want to attend a school with such low respect for applicants to begin with. the dean sent me an email saying he was sorry, but even within the apology email, they kept trying to sell podiatry to me... :lame:

its really not the dental school's fault.

I bet the higher-ups (people even higher than the dean of the dental school ~ people with zero admission experience) are pushing this agenda on them. They don't underestand how much commitment students take on JUST TO SHOW proof that dentistry is their calling.

C'mon now. Don't be ridiculous Rainee.

Yes, it was just a joke. But either way, y'all should contact the school heads and change this podiatry recruiting. I feel bad mostly for the students attending the school.

Why?

Once word gets out there about this, and it already has, Western will be associated with that "image." I can imagine going to an interview and asking other interviewees where they interviewed, and one says Western. Then someone mentions the whole podiatry spiel. Words spread like fire and this incidence is not a good thing. Heck, I'm sure many schools get-to-gether for dental conferences. What do you think other colleagues at different schools will think about you and Western?

Another school that already has an "image" issue is NYU; however, people have refuted that "image" of NYU. None-the-less, there are many students that still see NYU that way.

Either way, somethings gotta change regarding this issue.

Well then not a refelection on the Dental School, but how the school is run in general. I would still not want to attend a school that is Run like that. That just shows there is a severe lack of consideration to these applicants. Like you said "They don't underestand how much commitment students take on JUST TO SHOW proof that dentistry is their calling."

It does compensate well, but from what i hear from my buddy in POD, it's a hard path. There is a lot of competition for residencies, many don't get them, and it is hard to find a job afterward.

Like someone else said, there is very little autonomy, and not much respect from the MDs and DOs. In fact the orthopedic surgeons are fighting for the "expert" position on ankle surgery.

However, i think with an aging population it is a good field to go into. This is just what i have heard, so take it with a grain of salt.

This is getting blown way out of proportion. We attend a lot of dental conferences with colleagues and I can tell you no one cares what is said on SDN. Pre-dental students care and that is why I am saying that people that have have actually attended an interview here know that the flyer is not representative of the school. I appreciate the OP's feelings because I don't like the flyer either. But at the same time I think it is comical that people who haven't even applied to or seen Western or are even dental students are "weighing in" and acting like they know everything. Getting rejected sucks but it is a part of life. While I don't agree with the flyer, you gotta relax.

That's what I've heard as well. Think about it, everyone in pod is trying to become a foot and ankle surgeon but how many actually achieve that? The rest are scraping along and trying to find a decent job. Not to mention there's only really 3 worthwhile pod schools and the rest are kinda shady.....

Some of the POD schools do accept the DAT. It would be an easy transition if the applicant wasn't completely set on dentistry.

I think only two of the schools accept DAT and they're trying to phase it out. Most of the more respectable schools only accept MCAT.

So I got the same e-mail and shared it with some pre-med friends. They asked me if I would be pissed if it was for medical school. I think I would be angry on the basis that I didn't apply to their medical school nor podiatry school. I applied to their dental school. Podiatry is not dental nor is any other professional school.

As a dental professional, their dean should be promoting his field and not pushing fall backs unless it would help get into their school. Plus I thought using my e-mail (that they got from AADSAS) to sell some other program was illegal? Anyone know?

Well the purpose of the email was to reject you. They threw in a plug. They're not selling anything and there are many who received rejections that are looking for a Plan B.

Just fyi, we've contacted our class officers who are going to bring this issue to the administration and see what's up.
