Hi,
I am an incoming MS1 and am planning on applying for the 2012 MSKCC Summer Fellowship. I searched these forums for the fellowship but the few threads were very unhelpful (people just posting their acceptances/rejections).

For people who applied or went through the program, is any faculty member's lab open for application or are a limited number of labs available to apply for? I called the Fellowship's office and they said the application isn't released until December. The website mentions that you stand a better chance if you apply to certain labs (I took that to mean the labs that are doing un-sexy research). Do you have any idea what the research topics are that would be less competitive?

Also, did you apply for any other summer research fellowships? I know MD Anderson has one, are there any other good cancer research fellowships?

Thanks in advance for your help!

hah
I applied to that....I also know that just about everyone else did as well. I mean, who wouldn't want to spend their summer in the city? Point is, there are a very limited number of spots and I assume they pick applicants based on previous research experience in the same field. I mean, what else is there to judge a bunch of MS1's by? MCAT score? lol
Having connections certainly helps.

When the application comes out, they will give you a list of projects, but if I recall correctly, they don't tell you any names of PIs. You just pick ur top3 and that's it. I'd recommend picking the lamest sounding ones in order to improve ur chances. I was dumb....I selected stuff that sounded aweomse, like "robotic surgery" haha

I smoked pot with Sloan Kettering and Johnny Hopkins. They were blazing that **** up every day.

How is starting medical school relevant at all to asking basic questions about a summer experience? Unless you're going to be helpful you should take your condescension elsewhere, Doxycycline.

Don't even bother applying to this program unless you're attending HMS, Yale, Hopkins or one of those top 15 schools OR have a Nobel prize winning faculty member writing you a letter of recommendation.

BTW Chill out - you have much to learn from the upperclassmen.
