Applying to EM and was wondering if I should include a SLOR from an Internal Medicine sub-internship? I have a limited amount of LOR options at this piont. Is this an absolue no-no or is it ok as long as I tell the person writing the SLOR I'm considering EM? Any and all help is appreciated.

The SLOE (formerly called the SLOR) is a form created by CORD (the council of emergency medicine residency directors). It's a tool for EM program directors to communicate to other residency directors about the performance of a medical student on an EM rotation compared to other medical students.

A letter from an IM PD about your performance on an IM rotation does not fulfill the purpose of the form. Plus the questions it asks aren't really relevant to an IM rotation.

how about the idea of adding the SLOR form for applying to IM? I rotated in EM as I thought I would really like it, but decided to apply IM instead and am wondering if I should just send the main LOR or the LOR with the SLOR form attached. I too have limited US LOR options, which is why I am using a EM LOR to apply to IM.

The SLOR/SLOE form is useless as a LOR for an IM program.

Remember the SLOE is a form designeed by EM Program Directors so they can communicate how a students did on an EM rotation to other EM Program Directors for the purpose of comparing that student to other students interested in EM.

It's all designed and meant to be kept in-specialty so to speak.

So just use the LOR, and not the SLOE/SLOR
