Hello everyone!

EM is definetly one of the specialties that I am interested in because I like to keep on the move and appreciate time off. But I have a concern that although I can work long shifts now and night shifts now, what will I do in 20-30 years when I am knocking on 60?? There does not seem to be many options for EM docs looking to slow down their workload. FP docs, for example, can sell their practice, work 2-3 days per week instead of 5, or work at a very low-stress envt (eg. weight loss or skin clinic). What can EM docs do? Is this a negative to the field?

One of the great things about EM is the flexibility that it offers. I have guys in my group working anywhere from 6 to 16 shifts a month. Being young and indebted, I'm working as much as possible now, but have no intention of working more than part-time when I'm fifty. We have no practice to sell, staff to let go, patients to abandon, etc.
