Hi everyone,

I have been fortunate enough to have been accepted to three schools. There wasn't one school that I absolutely loved when I interviewed, and they all have similar tuition, so I would love some more opinions on these schools. I was not given any scholarships by Jefferson, was offered $10k from Creighton, and haven't heard back from SLU yet. I'm definitely not sure which specialty I'm interested in pursuing, so I do not want to go anywhere that may negatively impact my chances of getting into more competitive specialties. I have also heard that I should consider schools that are in the area I would ultimately want to live; how important is this consideration? I eventually want to live in the midwest or west, possibly return to Colorado.

SLU
Pros:
  • very committed to student welfare and happiness
  • "hands-on" 3rd year
  • fairly easy to get involved in research if you are willing to seek it out
  • true P/F
  • size of city is what I am used to living in
Cons:
  • on interview day, several students I spoke with seemed apologetic about the school ("It's a good school, but it's not WashU"), overall impression that it was many students' second choice
  • unsafe location
  • older facilities
  • currently on probation

Creighton
Pros:
  • students seemed very happy to be there, friendly and welcoming
  • decent reputation for clinical training
  • new hospital
  • well worn path to go back to Colorado
Cons:
  • *very little focus on research
  • I don't particularly like Omaha, but I don't dislike it either
  • lower average step 1 scores

Jefferson

Pros:
  • everyone I met on interview day seemed to love being there
  • great area of Philly, relatively safe, lots to do
  • nicer facilities
  • large, active alumni network
Cons:
  • Huge class size (not sure if that is a problem during rotations, concerned about being lost in crowd of students)
  • *cost of living higher in Philadelphia than in St Louis or Omaha
  • I'm not used to living in such a "big city", not sure how much I would like it
  • far from family

Attach a poll to this thread.

Now, Let me chime in about ur points about SLU(heads up I have a huge SLU bias I will be attending in the fall).

-SLU will be off probation in October 2018 and I don't think should be a huge problem
-"older Facilities"? The brand new hospital right next to SLU will be ready in 2020.
- you have a point, the is ghetto.
- SLUS True pass fail makes everything less stressful according to current med students.

-------------------------------------

Overall, you cant go wrong with any of these three. I think Jefferson is the "better" of the schools but SLU is probably the best fit because the lower COA, focus on student well being, and where you want to match. I think SLU can do everything Creighton can do but just a little better given the whole true pass fail. Most importantly, go with your gut!

Goodluck!

Thanks so much for your input! I couldn't find an option anywhere to include a poll, and I thought you had to be a senior member to do that? I'm brand new to sdn and I'm still trying to figure it out, so please let me know if there's a way I can attach a poll.

Maybe try edit post? I have no idea

I would eliminate Creighton, then pick the one you are most comfortable with.

The above poster is right, Jeff is the "better" school but I dont think its significant enough a difference to go there if you like SLU more.

Congrats!

Is Jefferson really better than SLU? I think SLU was ranked very high this year by USNWR, check that out just for reference.
