Which would be more useful during clinical rotations, a 7 inch tablet (nexus 7, ipad mini) or a smartphone (android/iphone)?

Please help me decide which form factor would be more useful for looking stuff up during rotations, etc. For the tablet, i can't go larger than 7 in because it won't fit in my white coat pocket. also, i don't want this to turn into an android vs apple thread.

thank you

Phablet maybe? Samsung Note II 5.5" screen.

A smartphone is such a useful device overall, if you have to choose between the two I'd go with that. But keep in mind that if you intend to read on it during rotations it may look like you're slacking.

If you have to choose, I'd say go for the smartphone, but honestly if you have the funds, both serve a different purpose in my opinion, so both would be useful. I use the phone for all the looking up stuff, Epocrates, etc, but for me the tablet isn't just a bigger screen to replace a phone, it replaces carrying around books and binders full of notes. Having Harrison's in tablet form is obviously much more convenient than lugging around the text.

I bought the Nexus 7 specifically for the wards because I was tired carrying books and papers in my pocket. I also have an android phone from before so I just tether my 4g ont my tablet since the hospital doesn't have any wifi. Just make sure you have internet access or else it's just paper weight imo.

I plan on getting a Note II. I have to carry the phone around, I don't want a tablet AND a phone. That's too much stuff to carry around and worry if it is charged or not.

Are you guys allowed to take notes on your phones/tablets when rounding?

I love the Note II.

Do you have an S3/Iphone 5/Nexus 4 already?

Then get a Nexus 7.

If not, go for Nexus 4 or Note II.

I use my Nexus 7 in the hospital every day. I am much more efficient with it. That having been said, if I wasn't entering in order and looking up things in the EMR every 30 seconds, my phone would be far more useful. For medical school I think a smart phone is more important.

I'm thinking about getting a Nexus 7. they're pretty cheap right now and my hospital's EMR can get set up on it pretty easily

My iphone was invaluable in the hospital-- particularly when looking up drugs, dosages, differentials, etc. The medcalcs were also very useful. Tablets can be great, but I was too paranoid to take mine to work on medicine, etc.
