SMDEP 2015 THREAD

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Gahh, I'm so anxious! I've been checking the SMDEP site every day now since December.
I feel like I will continue to be obsessed until the final decisions are made.
Same here!

I'm waiting for Feb 15...in fact I can't wait :rage:

Hi everyone. I am brand new to the site. I attended the Yale program. If you have any additional questions please feel free to ask.

hey, I still have one school not in review yet, is that normal??

I check the site frequently as well. I'm soooo anxious. Feb 15 seems so far away.

Haha I have a countdown app for feb 15 on my phone. Hope we all get in where we want.

Omg me too I thought I was the only one. I check it several times a day. Where and when did u apply?

It was officially "completed" on December 31st!

I applied to:
Washington
Duke
UCLA

....and I really regret my decision, because my cousin flatly told me I won't get in to any of them. They're all really competitive and being Asian/non-URM won't make it any easier 🙁

By the way, what do you guys think is considered as "economically disadvantaged" (like which income range)?

I have an Asian friend that did it at UWASH. Best experience of her life. Don't worry! If you applied early, you're in good shape 🙂

Sweet! May I ask which type of Asian she was? (*This gives me some hope*)
And which sites did you apply to?

my application was completed on 12/31/14 and none of my sites are under review +pity+

Hello everyone, I graduated from the SMDEP UNMC site in 2014. Below are some suggestions for those of you who are applying to SMDEP this year:

1. If you haven't completed your application or recommendation or transcripts, do that ASAP. Almost all of the SMDEP sites are first come, first serve.

2. Take some extra time to write decent essays. Both Diversity essay and Personal Statement are very important.

3. Ask recommendations with those professors who know you well and can write a strong letter on your behalf.

4. Although a solid GPA is always good, it is not the only thing that will get you in. A well rounded application is always helpful.

5. I might be biased but there is no other program for Pre-Med and Pre-Dental (or Allied Health if you are not sure) students better than this. Trust me! At the end of six weeks, you will see healthcare with a completely new perspective.

6. I went to UNMC. It gives you a $400 travel stipend if you are flying or driving more than 40 miles away from NE. (Check their Website) UNMC is an incredible site, and I absolutely loved it. You will make friends that will go to Medical/Dental school with you in the future; friends that will be in touch with you for the rest of your lives.

I wish everyone the very best. You only get this chance once in your lifetime so make the most of it. Best Wishes!

Yes! I thought if anything Duke or UCLA were going to be like the most popular. Is Columbia your #1 site?
Yeah I've heard duke n Columbia have the best programs. My #1 is yale but I feel like no one gets into that one so ehhhh

Sweet! May I ask which type of Asian she was? (*This gives me some hope*)
And which sites did you apply to?

Is anyone under review for Columbia? I applied nov1 and had my app completed dec15 and I'm still not under review for Columbia. All my other sites are

UNMC is my top pick! While you were there did they mention anything about what percentage of applicants they accept or anything like that?

Is anyone under review for Howard?

Is anyone in review for UCLA? My app was submitted 11/7 and completed 12/19. Yale & Louisville have me in review. Just waiting on UCLA.

I'm under review for UCLA (since 1-2 weeks ago, I believe)! My application was completed on 12/31.
Although, I highly doubt I'll get in; I really messed up my Personal Statement section :l

Good luck to you, though!

You may get in! Good luck to you too!

where did you apply?
I applied to UCLA, Columbia, and Rutgers. I contacted SMDEP and I was told that the dashes could mean that they have made a decision already or that they need to do so...basically is doesn't matter because we won't know anything until February 15.

How long after you submit your application does it take for the recommendations and LOR to be processed? I submitted on 1/17 but my application is still incomplete. I dont think I'll make the first deadline

If you are a NE resident, you have a greater chance of being accepted at UNMC. SMDEP program, at all sites, is very competitive. They have far more applicants than the class size of 80. So do your best on essays and have wonderful recommendations. UNMC is an incredible site and you will have so much fun if you end up there. Best wishes!

It takes 10 business days to process the LOR and transcripts

Someone said the status doesn't matter as long as you turned everything in. Dashes could mean a decision has already been made. So, we just have to be patient

Very true. I called Yale and they said not to pay attention to those dashes. Nothing matters until Feb 15. Only worry if it's Feb 15 and there's still no answer.

My application is completed with only one recommendation!!! Is this going to hurt my chances?

I was in the same situation so I called my sites individually and asked them. Columbia said it didn't matter and that it wouldn't hurt me. Yale said they would wait until all my materials are in or they may just go ahead and review with only one letter in. So I don't think you will be terribly affected. From what I've heard in the past it all comes down to your essays. I've also heard that many have been accepted without letters of rec.

Thank you! I'll call them tomorrow. I hope my second one comes in soon

hey, I still have one school not in review yet, is that normal??
Hey, sorry for the slow reply. I don't visit the site everyday. To answer your question..."yes it is normal." Consider it a good thing. Those programs tend to not do rolling admissions and will review all at the same time. BUT, some programs may have just not gotten to you. These are admissions and diversity programs taking on additional tasks. So, SMDEP is one of many programs taking place at the medical/ dental school.
