I'm thinking about doing the SMDEP this summer in Houston. Does anyone know if dental schools favor student in texas who have gone through this program? Does anyone have any personal experience with the program? If so, did you take anything from it?

I would recommend attending SMDEP. We offer that program here at Columbia and needless to say, it does help you when it comes to the application process. We have a lot of students who participated in SMDEP. It's also free, all expenses more or less paid for! Despite the work you'll be doing in the program, you also build such nice connections with your peers from all over the country. Overall, do it!

I attended SMDEP this past summer in Houston, and I would recommend it to all freshman and sophomores interested in dentistry (or medicine). I do not know if it directly increased my chances for the Texas schools, but like Koala stated, it gets your name through the door and you get to meet the Associate Dean of Student Affairs, who has a lot of say on the admissions committee. 👍
Honestly, the academic courses they offerred does not really help in preparing for the DAT, but it's the networking with pre-dental students, dental students, and dentists that makes it all worth it in the end.
