Hello fellow SDNers,

I wonder if there is anyone who completed SMPs after doing a postbacc. If you have done it, what was the reason you chose to do SMP? If you are in Postbacc program, are you considering of applying to SMPs before you apply to medical school?

After post-baccs, I think that SMP's fall into 2 categories:

1) Something to do in your glide year - pick a school you normally would be iffy at and try to get some form of a linkage/leg up.

2) No other options. If your current #'s aren't getting you interviews, the next step is generally SMP.

I did GU's SMP after doing a one year postbacc (and sitting out a glide year.) Maxprime is right, I did the SMP because my stats, even with a very good performance in a PostBacc, were not good enough to get me into medical school.

I want to do an SMP after post-bacc because of stats to get a leg up. Georgetown, Loyola or Rosalind will be able to take some of my $ 🙂 I think it will help prepare me for medical school, while the post bacc helped me take classes. You could also do research in your glide year.

SMPs will make your first year of med school much, much easier. At many SMPs you end up taking almost all of the first year med curriculum w/ med student. The second time around should be kinda a joke.

If the fact you can hang with current med students doesn't prove something to the adcoms I am not sure what will.

Agreed - you are taking med school classes & competing with the med students - I think that is the real value of an SMP. There's no more questioning how you "may" do - it's right there on paper.

Also remember that your glide year will be your last chance to be on a long vacation for a while. If I apply next year, I'm taking classes in fall and if I matriculate I'm going to take Spring/Summer off and do something fun that I won't ever have time for. Go to every major league ballpark, write the great American novel, etc.

If you're in love with a program, I say go for it. But if you're going to get into places without it, I say don't kill yourself during what could be your last big vacation. You're going to have PLENTY of expenses and studying ahead of you, SMP is a big commitment if you don't really need it to go to med school.
