Hi all,

Thanks in advance for reading and any advice. I currently finished my first semester at an SMP program taking identical courses as the medical students. I'll finish the semester with about a 3.9 gpa and a top 5 rank in my class (75-100 students). I have a 3.45 undergraduate gpa and a few publications and years of work experience. My MCAT is 26. I know it's a few years old but I know there a few schools that will still take it. Do I have a shot at any MD schools with these kind of stats and applying this late in the year?

thanks

My opinion: You should retake the MCAT. Not only because it opens up a huge number of schools, but because someone at the top of their medical classes is very likely to improve a lot on a prior 26!

Thanks both! There isn't much time to add MCAT studying to the SMP. My option would be to study for it starting in June when the program finishes or take the acceptance from the SMP program (if they offered it). The SMP program is at a DO school, would this effect my chances at all?

Well, how would you feel about attending that DO school? I'd wait and see if it's actually a choice to be made before making it. If you want to apply out elsewhere, and especially if you're aiming MD, I think you'd need to fit a retake in somehow though.

I'm not convinced that a single semester will be that convincing.

And it's way too late to apply this year....especially with a 26, for MD schools.

For DO schools? I think that by the time your secondaries land, you'd end up interviewing for a spot on a wait list.

Med schools aren't going anywhere.

Apply next year with the best possible app, and finish the SMP (assuming it's a one year program).

Yeah, too late to apply now. However, I would work on completing your personal statement and EC essays so that your application will be ready when the cycle opens next year. Prewriting some secondaries wouldn't hurt either. Also, retake the MCAT.
