Hello,

So I have something ridiculously close to a 3.0 (think like a 2.97). Upper division at my university is a 2.5 (with grades improving), and lower division at community college was a 3.2.

I wanted to apply to SMPs, and I wasn't sure: a. which ones to apply to, and b. the time frame I'm looking at. I haven't taken my MCATs yet, but I'm pretty confident that if i study well, I will do pretty well on them.

I also am really strong in research and extracurriculars. I've had at least 3 years of research experience, and have done everything from leadership positions to clinical.

So right now I'm planning the time frame I'm looking at for applying, and studying for the MCATs, and also where I want to realistically apply to.

Any advice you can give would be great! Thanks! 🙂

Can you take a couple more undergrad classes while you're studying for the MCAT, and get up over 3.0?

Even with success in an SMP, a sub-3.0 is uncomfortably likely to keep you out of med school.

Links to all the SMPs are in the sticky at the top of the forum.

Best of luck to you.

1) You should apply to high linkage programs: EVMS comes to mind. The lower your GPA the more high linkage helps.

2) You shouldn't be applying with less than a 3.0. You have two full semesters before SMP applications come due. Take a class on basket weaving and another one on the history of the Simspons. 0.03 is not that much of a hurdle.

The georgetown SMP (I think the best SMP when we aren't talking about linkages) would potentially accept someone with under a 3.0, but you'd have to have a great MCAT score... Anytime they accept someone with under a 3.0 they have to get special permission from the graduate school, etc. etc.

Ultimately though I agree with perrotfish, take some online classes at a local community college and get a couple A's, get it over 3.0, it will make your life a LOT simpler...
