EDIT: This was supposed to be a thread about the first day of SN2. However as with all intelligent life, things evolve. This thread has now become a support page for people following the SN2 plan. You can think of it as Alcoholics Anonymous for people studying to take the MCAT using the SN2 plan.

EDIT July 1, 2014:
If you are interested in @mehc012's Anki Deck, DO NOT SEND A PM. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7if6wgaif98rkoa/mehc012 SN2edCh4s.apkg
**A NOTE: @mehc012 and several others (myself included) want to tell you guys that studying from another person's deck will probably not be as beneficial to you as creating your own cards. Yes you can take advantage of @mehc012's generosity, but you won't get the same advantage. Study the material. Create cards as you go along. You will find it more helpful to your studying. **

EDIT July 22, 2014:
The following is @TBRBiosadist's official MCAT Verbal Reasoning Strategy:
@TBRBiosadist's strategy that got [him] from a 7 average to scoring 13-15 average..

Spend the bulk of your time reading. Up to 3 minutes per passage.
  • Read the first and last paragraph thoroughly to begin with. Understand what the authors main point will be because 90% of questions require nothing more than a general idea.
  • After this, read the entire passage slowly enough where you dont feel like you need to reread sentences for understanding.
Next is just answer questions, there is a few tricks here that work about 90% of the time
  • Unless the passage is asking you about a specific detail, dont look back. READ EVERY ANSWER THOROUGLY AND THEN Answer what makes sense from the general point of the passage. Its very easy to prove a wrong answer to be somewhat correct if you dig hard enough, dont. Answer what your gut says and move onto the next question, dont contemplate to much. With that being said...
  • Answer like you were dropped on the head as a child. Alot of times if Im arguing between two answers, there is the answer that is 100% correct, and one that is 90% correct. Be an idoit and choose the one that seems like it is correct. However.....
  • "Always" is a word to avoid. If an answer uses this word, or definites like it, it is something to avoid. I would say 80% of the time the wishy washy answer is more correct then the highly affirmative one. This leads to my final point....
  • 100% of the time you are not actually looking for the "right" answer in verbal, this isnt PS or BS where 1+1 almost always equals 2 (unless we are talking about the different sedimentation values for Ribosomes). In verbal you are looking for the answer that isnt wrong. Often times an answer will seem very "right" but one aspect of it is clearly wrong, as compared to an answer that isnt wrong, but doesnt seem as right as that answer, these are meant to fool you. Choose the answer that isnt wrong.
I understand that I few of these tips may be at odds with each other. Ultimately you must adjust slightly for each passage, but it comes down to one thing. Read thoroughly. Read every sentence in the passage. Read every question. Read every answer. Then the correct answer will be fairly obvious. This may seem like it takes longer, but it takes much less time than skimming, and then trying to find the correct information later.

Or to summarize in one sentence

Understand what the hell the author is arguing

EDIT July 26, 2014:

@DoctorInASaree uploaded a guide to Verbal Reasoning. If you're interested, it's worth a look. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2byivymmqwlvjms/MCAT VR Primer DRSAREE.pdf

EDIT 2, July 26, 2014: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/sn2d-first-day.1074344/page-52#post-15510851
________________________________________________
Just finished the first day of SN2...man is it long and exhausting.

The first day is BR physics chapter (translational motion) + 1/3 of the passages. I felt like I wasn't able to apply the stuff I read into the stuff I was tested on.

Has anyone felt this way when following the schedule? It just seems like the contents of the chapter didn't really stick in my head when I took the practice passages. Will this improve over time?

EDIT 3, March 4, 2015:

For verbal, if you are feeling lost and confused, I highly highly recommend you to look into the MCAT Strategy Course by @Jack Westin. I've been working with him, and nothing comes close to his course and teaching. It's a strategy course, so it will cover everything, not just the VR/CARS section.

What other practice tests are ya'll going to be doing besides the official ones. I have the Kaplan ones but just wondering if there are better alternative sources?
I literally just ordered the Berkeley exams 1-7

It seems like Berkeley Review is stuck in the stone age. To use their FL's you have to wait until they email you a login/password and a link. Then when you take the exam, the freaking tests don't score themselves. They email YOU a scale so you can grade it yourself. I'm not really happy with this. It's like the stone ages. You can't even access the tests until 45 days PRIOR to your actual MCAT. I hate this bureaucratic bull****

on top of this, they say you can only access their exams from a max of 2 computers, or they will deactivate your access. I know that berkeley is good, but come on. The USSR has fallen.

lol I took their tests as well.

All ya crazy mutha****as and ya doin extra tests while im just sittin here spoonin the Berkeley review

Tonight is a Anki night I guess .. I think making flash card actually help me learn the stuff a tad bit better

Im using Anki to make flash cards during review days .. I do less actual sitting down and reviewing and more dissecting the material to make flash cards. I also make flash cards on the concepts behind the 1/3 passages I do.. Hope to (insert deity) this will improve my 40% average in passages.

Ive seen people on here selling TBR exams as pdf I'm not sure if this is a legit way of getting them, if its not i apologize but it might be something you want to look into.

@TexasSurgeon I decided to randomly click on your MDapp profile

Yeah I've noticed this. I just wanted to stick to CBTs so I can get used to the formatting and whatnot. Thanks 🙂

Any of you guys submitting your apps this cycle? My plan was to submit my primary before 4th of July but I've been slacking lol. Randomly decided to rewrite my personal statement this weekend

I hope to be applying this year. But my LOR's are becoming an issue. One of the professors passed away at a very inconvenient time. Another one is in the process of moving so he said he needs a few more weeks. Another one just disappeared....

I remember when I was first ordering their books and I was like wtf I have to MAIL you the order form. I think they have upgraded to fax now, so they have made it to the 90's now.

Also have you seen the ranking of the exams for BR? It's below.

TBR Practice Test I . . . . .Good starter exam (difficult PS, easy VR, medium BS)
TBR Practice Test II . . . . Mid-range Exam (medium PS, hard VR, medium BS)
TBR Practice Test III . . . .Punishment Exam (difficult PS, difficult VR, difficult BS)
TBR Practice Test IV . . . . Mid-range Exam (medium PS, medium VR, hard BS)
TBR Practice Test V . . . . .Difficult Exam (hard PS, medium VR, hard BS)
TBR Practice Test VI . . . . Mid-range Exam (semi-easy PS, medium VR, medium BS)
TBR Practice Test VII . . . .Hard Exam (hard PS, medium VR, hard BS)

Oh yeah! I was looking for this, thanks! I think it'll be good practice.

I feel like the last month of SN2 is pretty ambiguous. Anyone agree? There's no chapters to do so it's less day to day stress. I'm pretty sure it's a good idea to take a practice exam every 3 days or so. So I'll probably take 2 BR FL's by the end of this month. Leaving me with 5 BR FL's + 7 AAMC FL's that I haven't taken. Once I take FL's I'll figure out where I'm weak in, and use EK1001 + unused BR passages (last 1/3) to study. I just need to sit down and write all this scheduling out

I think I'm just going to figure out my FL start date, and hit that no matter what happens with content review. I'll keep doing chapters in the off days until I catch up. Sound workable?

Maybe, maybe not. Instead of figuring out an FL start date, maybe try and just take an FL every Friday or something? I did that a few times and it's helped me. Then come back and review the FL. It doesn't take as long as SN2 gives you to review. 2 days is way more than you really need. I would say probably 5-8 hours to thoroughly review it.

However, I do fall behind by doing this. I was behind about 2 days and just recently caught up. If you can do it then great. I just told myself I wanted all my content review done by the last week of july.

Does anyone have an idea to BR's explanation for ochem chapter 6 passage 7, p. 138, question 46?

They say: Choice A is the best answer.

and then at the end of their explanation: Choice C is the best answer.
I'm pretty sure the answer is C

I'm already behind. I don't want to make my current review slower AND start FLs without finishing content first.
Plus, I would prefer to take FLs only on full days off.
The problem is I work too much...

Ok then just figure out a date for you to finish content review and hit it hard.
I'm surprised at how much I still need to cover. Like 3-4 chapters across all subjects. I think at least seeing all the material 100% will make any question on the MCAT at least more manageable.

I'm just having difficulty 'hitting it hard'. When I do review, I usually finish 2 BR days, but I don't get to review every day, or even every other.

C is correct! One more carbon added nullifies choices A & B.

-@doctorinasaree, you beat me! lol

SO.
I just want to put it out there that EK bio doesn't do Evolution ANY justice and so I am going to review Genetics/Evolution using my Kaplan book which has a bunch of pretty diagrams and really goes over all the AAMC topics listed 🙂

p.s. does anybody else feel frustrated when it's super hot outside and all you have is HOT coffee fml. (#needmoreiceinmylife #iceicebaby)

lol thanks saree & avenlea

yeah my struggle is in after i do the second 1/3's and day after. so many passages to review. i almost always get behind after that

Aw man that's not cool. Luckily I had all my letters in mid June. I still want to get a DO letter though but I have time since those apps have a longer cycle.

Man I wish I had more time to do more FL's. But I'll only have time to finish up the AAMC's. They way I'm doing it is FL every 2 days and review + TBR review and last 1/3 in between. So this weekend would be:

July 12 - AAMC 5
13 - Review FL + Review chapter 1 TBR and last 1/3
14 - Review FL + Review chapter 2 TBR and last 1/3
15 - AAMC 7

and so on..I have 4 buffer days before my exam on the 1st so I have a little flexibility. But I would like to have at least 2 days off before the exam.

That doesn't bug me - as I said, I split those up. So, say that I do a 2nd 1/3 for Ch5s, and my next three study days have me doing Bio, Phys, Orgo. On postday 1, I study Bio Ch6 and do 6a (the first 1/3). On postday 2, I study Phys 6 and do Phys 6a passages, but REVIEW Bio 5b (the second 1/3) and 6a. On postday 3, I study Orgo 6 and do 6a, but REVIEW Phys 5b and 6a. And so on. Personally, I combine 'do the EK1001s for each subject' with the REVIEW...so it's actually:
postday 1: Study Bio 6, Do Bio 6a
postday 2: Study Phys 6, Do Phys 6a, Review Bio 5b and 6a (no EK for Bio)
postday 3: Study Orgo 6, Do Orgo 6a, Review Phys 5b and 6a, do EK for Phys
postday 4: Study Chem 5, Do Chem 6a, Review Orgo 5b and 6a, do EK for Orgo
postday 5: Study Bio 7, Do Bio 7a, Review Chem 5b and 6a, do EK for Chem
postday 6: Review Bio 7a. (No EK for Bio) Read all TPRH chapters (SN2ed rereads TBR, but I just happen to have TPRH). Do some of the 2nd 1/3s.
postday 7: Finish second 1/3s.

I feel it spreads it out a bit better and lets me focus better. As a note, typically the passages that I 'Do' on a given day I actually do the next morning before work...so I study all evening and do passages in the morning when I'm more alert and have gone over my new Anki cards 2x (once at night, once in the AM). It works out the same schedule-wise, but my brain focuses better that way.

Who else is exhausted? I am about 5 weeks out of my exam and am just not motivated at all. I've been studying on and off since January and hitting the books almost everyday for 2 h or so since mid-March (non-trad) and I am just burnt out. Sometimes I take random hours of a day off or days off but I feel so guilty I don't enjoy them (non-scheduled break days). And maybe because grad school beat it out of me but I just can't study for more than 5 hours a day. I don't think I ever did study for 8 hours a day even in undergrad when I was super nerdy.

_end rant_

Does anyone remember the resolution of the monitors at the testing centers? I'm wondering if I should take the rest of my exams on my laptop (1366 x 768) or my desktop (1920 x 1080)

Does anyone else take notes like this?

I took those notes a while ago...handwriting is way off! Please excuse it!

(it's much better now I promise!)

I apologize to some if the essay following seems unwarranted, but I hope some of you can relate to it.

Brazil sucks. This game is becoming funny now

I just watched that game with my dad, and he came up with a hilarious post-game analysis: hooray scientific method! Germany was employing observable strategies and responding to the way Brazil was playing. Brazil, on the other hand, were relying on individual skill and were not playing under a coherent system.
TL;DR - Teams not making use of scientific reasoning even in sports are at a loss, and time has passed them by (it may have worked twenty years ago)...the "framework-less" era has passed some of these teams by. Yay us people employing scientific reasoning on the MCAT!

I'm not going to pretend to be erudite when it comes to football but...they did win 7-1 so I think he made some sense!🙂

Now to make up for those two hours...groan.

Late Edit: What I found most interesting was how dejected those yellow shirt guys playing for Brazil looked after the twenty-five minute mark! I mean ugh! They're most likely arguably the best players in their entire country (therefore they possess a great deal of skill), yet they became psychologically compromised. Their reasoning was over-saturated with emotional reasoning (ER) and clearly lacked rational reasoning (RR).

I've read LOTS and LOTS of posts here on SDN, and I can't help but think about how many I have read about people just looking down on themselves "Oh, I couldn't possibly score high on the MCAT" or "Verbal is such a monster I'm fated to score poorly!". It seems to me that a great deal of posters DO put in many hours of work, but once psychologically compromised/demotivated they fail to finish strong. They enter the battlefield that is the MCAT with a defeated mindset...and end up defeated 🙁

I do my best to keep my head held-high and optimistic as much as possible about the MCAT (and in life as general as I'm sure many of you have deduced). It's tough...I know (TBR passage scores don't make it easy).

But, let's keep it together! Only a few more months left...let's not loose our cool like Brazil...let's reason things out like Germany 😀

Like how? I'm not sure what you are asking? Are you asking if we take it on an iPad? or if we put the same kind of information in our notes? Or if we use different colors like yours? Or if we put a giant logo of our user name?

Notes on the iPad. And hey, different colors are awesome! When writing final exams - I bring like 8 different colors of pens...sure Profs look at me strangely but my exam papers are beautiful.

FYI - Purple is my favorite color. I bought a pack of purple pens JUST for my MCAT scratch paper!:flame:
Someone motivate me! I have been twiddling my thumbs all day.

I hope my previous post that I edited helps a bit!😉

Not sure if I have older edition but my physics passages are split into a group of 3, then 7......so there is no passage 10 for me

Sorry I mean passage 9. (I do have 10 though). The title of the passage is "Magnetic Force". And the question is ' a magnetic compass is brought near a current carrying wire...then you have a diagram of a wire and compass. And it says where will the compass change the most.
