EDIT: This was supposed to be a thread about the first day of SN2. However as with all intelligent life, things evolve. This thread has now become a support page for people following the SN2 plan. You can think of it as Alcoholics Anonymous for people studying to take the MCAT using the SN2 plan.

The following is @TBRBiosadist's official MCAT Verbal Reasoning Strategy:
@TBRBiosadist's strategy that got [him] from a 7 average to scoring 13-15 average..

Spend the bulk of your time reading. Up to 3 minutes per passage.
  • Read the first and last paragraph thoroughly to begin with. Understand what the authors main point will be because 90% of questions require nothing more than a general idea.
  • After this, read the entire passage slowly enough where you dont feel like you need to reread sentences for understanding.
Next is just answer questions, there is a few tricks here that work about 90% of the time
  • Unless the passage is asking you about a specific detail, dont look back. READ EVERY ANSWER THOROUGLY AND THEN Answer what makes sense from the general point of the passage. Its very easy to prove a wrong answer to be somewhat correct if you dig hard enough, dont. Answer what your gut says and move onto the next question, dont contemplate to much. With that being said...
  • Answer like you were dropped on the head as a child. Alot of times if Im arguing between two answers, there is the answer that is 100% correct, and one that is 90% correct. Be an idoit and choose the one that seems like it is correct. However.....
  • "Always" is a word to avoid. If an answer uses this word, or definites like it, it is something to avoid. I would say 80% of the time the wishy washy answer is more correct then the highly affirmative one. This leads to my final point....
  • 100% of the time you are not actually looking for the "right" answer in verbal, this isnt PS or BS where 1+1 almost always equals 2 (unless we are talking about the different sedimentation values for Ribosomes). In verbal you are looking for the answer that isnt wrong. Often times an answer will seem very "right" but one aspect of it is clearly wrong, as compared to an answer that isnt wrong, but doesnt seem as right as that answer, these are meant to fool you. Choose the answer that isnt wrong.
I understand that I few of these tips may be at odds with each other. Ultimately you must adjust slightly for each passage, but it comes down to one thing. Read thoroughly. Read every sentence in the passage. Read every question. Read every answer. Then the correct answer will be fairly obvious. This may seem like it takes longer, but it takes much less time than skimming, and then trying to find the correct information later.

Or to summarize in one sentence

Understand what the hell the author is arguing

Just finished the first day of SN2...man is it long and exhausting.

The first day is BR physics chapter (translational motion) + 1/3 of the passages. I felt like I wasn't able to apply the stuff I read into the stuff I was tested on.

Has anyone felt this way when following the schedule? It just seems like the contents of the chapter didn't really stick in my head when I took the practice passages. Will this improve over time?

For verbal, if you are feeling lost and confused, I highly highly recommend you to look into the MCAT Strategy Course by @Jack Westin. I've been working with him, and nothing comes close to his course and teaching. It's a strategy course, so it will cover everything, not just the VR/CARS section.

@sillyjoe I saw your post in the other thread that you went up 5 points in 2 weeks from AAMC 3 to 8. What do you think allowed you to show that kind of improvement? Was it content review of your weak areas, or just doing practice?
 
You speak of doctors like they are above human. They are regular people and most people do hook up.... or try to. In general, TV is not a good litmus test for life.



@TBRBiosadist, I guess I should give up my quest of becoming a doctor because I am old---you'll be getting all the ladies once you graduate med school and I will be getting a new walker and cane.

so apparently there's a lot of factual errors in the ek1001 series??? so i guess im not using it then
Is there a lot of errors in the TBR books and if so, is there a thread somewhere that says where and why the answer/reasoning is wrong

i really dont want sources with bad answer keys bc I learn best from my mistakes

To be perfectly honest, EK 1001 is littered with mistakes in all the books. Went through all 4 books in the matter of about 10 days and realized how flawed and how some of them even had the incorrect answer chosen. But it did help me point out my weaknesses so it does have some benefit.
 
@avenlea can you please share your thoughts on the pickmonic for bio ? Is it any good ?

My bio day is in a few days, but I've only looked through the free ones so far and it looks really helpful so I wanted to share. Subscription looks like its $25 to nail down some intensive bio concepts through, and @BeachBlondie speaks highly of it. I'll probably splurge because I'm a big visual learner and spending the intensive time to get some bio engrained in my brain will help me a lot but I'll keep you updated. Check out the free stuff and see if it's your thing first!

Biggest MCAT buying mistake: I bought this $25 app on the app store called "MCAT mastery" when I first started studying after reading the ~amazing~ testimonials. I've used it like twice. So not worth the money.
 
Do you guys Highlight when practicing verbal in TPR ? I'm wondering if this will be good tool to get comfortable with when doing the exam. Just did poorly on couple of passages and I just realized that majority of the problems is just being too rushed. And 80% of the answers are said straight forward in the passage

practice, do more and dont give up now.

Just practice more and more.
And dont let anything depress you - no matter what score you are getting.
Just keep practicing. Without losing hope.

The hardest part about getting serious about studying is getting up when my alarm tells me to. I only pressed snooze for an hour today, and I still got up three hours before I normally did all summer (lol)

Waking up when my alarm tells me to is by far the hardest thing ever for me everyday!
I think I just forget why I set the alarm in the first place.. and keep sleeping.. only to wake up depressed/sad/regretful about the number of hours I have wasted sleeping.
10 more days guys -- we can do this!

TBR is a stud at preparing you with content and critical thinking skills. What it doesn't do is prepare you for the EXACT test. I think my score jump in the two weeks was a culmination of learning the AAMC exams, working with my timing, thorough review, @TBRBiosadist verbal strategy, and the previous 2+ months of studying. I did the SN2ed schedule minus hat trick and I gave up on doing verbal every morning about 2 months in when I finished TPRH (mostly because EK 101 was a nightmare IMHO).

I think it is also about your attitude and how you approach the study schedule. First off, you never want to read something or do a problem, not understand it and move on. You absolutely want to have an unquenchable desire to understand (note: not memorize) what is being presented to you. If you attack the TBR books that way I think you can be very successful.

I have also noticed many people stress memorization of equations etc. I made 1000+ notecards during my content review and I have not had to review them once. What is really great about TBR is if you do it thoroughly you will have most of these equations in the back of your head and a conceptual understanding without having to memorize.

Finally, use the MCAT Q&A section when you don't understand something and ANSWER questions. You only know something if you can teach it.

My advice may mean nothing if I don't do well on the actual exam so take all of this with a grain of salt.

I made the problem of not full understanding questions i got wrong and would sometimes pass them over or memorize the answer.

This was a horrible waste of time and isn't helpful. Listen to this post everyone. I wish i did earlier.

i just finished my first official day today too!
i am focusing on physics b/c I have never taken physics so..
and omg all I can say is that Im definitely not going to like reading passages and stuff. I was never good at that critical reading part on the SAT nor the science part on the ACT so this is like a disaster lol, but Im hoping to get accustomed to it as I study more
 
So this weekend:

1. Missed my close friends bachelor party and missed an opportunity to see all my good friends from college.
2. Best friends grandma died, couldn't go to the funeral or house
3. Close friend from abroad is in the states for 2 weeks and I can't get into the city because I am studying.
4. Both my closest friends got promotions to managers at a top 4 accounting firm to put them into the 80k/year bracket

Not to mention the fact that my friends seem to have TONS of time to go out, party, chill, etc. AND MAKE A F*CKING LIVING and here I am studying for a test getting paid nothing to do it.

My thoughts on my career choice

Oooh, awesome! I'm not alone, then! I can't imagine how confusing this would all be if I hadn't taken Physics, though (and if I hadn't already studied for the MCAT a year and a half ago, haha). But I'm sure if you just keep at it, it'll get a lot better!

I feel horrible because I took the weekend off to show a visiting bestie around my city and now I am 2 days behind. :boom: Its worse because most of the time I couldn't even relax because I was thinking about how I should be studying the whole time, and am more relaxed doing passages again today :woot:

Also, all of you fitness nerds out there...my work is doing a weight-loss challenge and the pot is REALLY big (multiple thousands of dollars), so...any hints? I know, I know, you guys are usually trying to beef up, but THERE IS A NEW MOTORCYCLE WORTH OF VALUE ON THE LINE!!! I've just never been a diet/weight-focused kinda girl, so...but yeah, thousands of dollars.

Still behind, ah well, such is life.

Anyways, is this mores about actual weight loss in pounds or fitness? Because losing weight and fitness are very different. You can gain a lot of weight but lose fat while training because muscle weighs more than fat.

If it's simply to lose weight, which i assume it is because the other is subjective, you simply want a caloric deficit per day of 500 calories to lose a pound a week. To lose even more quickly, you have to make your calories substantial to your diet, there can't be any empty calories that hold to value to the (nutrition wise, because you can argue that chocolate has value to your life just because of how amazing it is).

I would reduce calories from carbs and increase calories from protein. I would also start an exercise routine because this amps your metabolism and gets you to burn more calories stationary though out the day.


I'll leave the rest to my fitness nerd friends to aide in your journey 🙂

It's fine, I had to study very late into the morning because relatives were visiting and I couldn't get to studying till around 7pm.
Got burned out about a week ago and decided to play basketball all Friday night and go out with dinner. Was incredibly relaxing but I would be lying if I said I was upset that I wasn't studying but I have only taken about 3 days off in 3 months and plan to take a day off this Wednesday or Thursday before my first AAMC FL

Uh, of course I like motorcycles. They are awesome, and also waaay easier to torque on than cars! Anything that feels like flying and I'm there...motorcycles, SCUBA, indoor skydiving (I have not had the chance to go outdoor yet because of COURSE my mom finally decided to go when my ACL was torn, and that seemed like a bad idea).

And yeah, weight loss (by percentage). I figure I'm completely sedentary right now, but when I used to be routinely active I was 20lbs lighter no matter WHAT I ate, so I have a reasonable shot if I just start doing some form of exercise daily again. It was more the exercise part I was asking on, because tbh I've only ever really done team sports for exercise, but of course that is unfeasible in MCAT-land...and I hate running, so I was hoping for some suggestions. I mean, I'll do it for five gs, but :yuck: running sans any other context is the most mind-numbingly boring thing I can think of. I've always been a sprinter, not a runner (1mi is long distance imo), but it's hard to push yourself for 2hrs of sporadic sprinting rather than setting a clear goal like running a few miles, so I'll probably be stuck with that instead :barf:
I used to be able to sprint repeatedly for what, 9 frisbee games every weekend? That's 90min each and I played pretty much every point, so, what, like 12hrs of exercise? So it's not like I had no endurance, it was just... more repeated bursts than sustained effort. Even when I was in shape for that, and could outrun nearly anyone at any point in the tournament, if you tried to get me to jog 1mi I felt like someone was stabbing knives into me and I'd rather be punched in the face. I don't know why, I just do NOT jog well.

Keto diet, can lose 10lbs in the fist week. I did Awhile back

I'm wondering how to stagger my AAMC tests as there are only 7 left (maximum). I'm considering purchasing FL tests from TPR, and perhaps TBR. I'm not worried about content review or forgetting tidbits of information. I'm scoring very well, but I'm worried about running out of FL practice tests!

I would like to take AAMC 4 next Friday...

I would stagger, or even hold off until 1 month before. Better retention. Other fls sure, but leave aamcs for last, you want to be in that"mode"

Well, just finished my first day. This schedule is definitely a doozy, but I can see how it could really pay off in the end.

Is anyone here taking the November 7th MCAT?

Saree why did you decide on TPR>TBR? Also were you interested in the GS at all? I also will have lots of time after content review to do plenty of FLs, and I have TPR's and AAMC's, but was wondering if GS would actually help with improving PS math skills
 
Well, just finished my first day. This schedule is definitely a doozy, but I can see how it could really pay off in the end.

Is anyone here taking the November 7th MCAT?

Congrats!!! We were all there. The schedule definitely works if you put the proper time into it. It will also suck less and less as you get used to it. Good luck on day 2.

I didn't chose the schedule, it chose me.
 
I would stagger, or even hold off until 1 month before. Better retention. Other fls sure, but leave aamcs for last, you want to be in that"mode"

Mhm! That sounds prudent. Content review for another month or so...then TPR tests..and finally AAMC!

Saree why did you decide on TPR>TBR? Also were you interested in the GS at all? I also will have lots of time after content review to do plenty of FLs, and I have TPR's and AAMC's, but was wondering if GS would actually help with improving PS math skills

Well, TBR passages demand mastery of detailed content, and in that vein they are not representative of the passages one will find in AAMC (one can intuit a great deal of the questions using VR tactics). TBR's Verbal passages are far from being representative of what one comes to expect from AAMC FL tests. Perhaps @TexasSurgeon may be able to provide you with another perspective on TBR's FL tests; as I believe he has ordered the set.

GS - Others have told me that they do not believe that their FL's are representative of the MCAT or AAMC FL tests. I do not have any first hand experiences with respect to GS. However, I am quite fond of my purse and its contents, and I am not willing to part with them without good reason. 😀

TPR - My MCAT content review comprises of TBR and TPR materials. In addition to that, I found the TPRSH workbook to be of tremendous value to my ongoing studies. With that said, I have taken one of their FL practice tests and scored a 43 which is eerily similar to my AAMC #3 score of 44. Incidentally, those are the two reasons as to why I believe TPR to be more representative of AAMC FL tests as compared to its competitors.

Don't even get me started on Kaplan.

Definitely the vibe I'm getting right now...

I watched thirty seconds of that video clip, and I am petrified. I don't know how I will be able to sleep tonight. :arghh::arghh: I don't feel safe, and I think that I'm going to be abducted by aliens. 👽 Don't worry - I'll have those aliens MCAT ready in two months time. 😀
 
For those who might be struggling with a schedule, I set this up for myself. (Note: The Carnegie Library I go to in Pittsburgh opens at 10 so that's when I start.)

10:30Review ALL Questions from Previous Day

11:30Read BR Chapter / Annotate Text

12:30Lunch

1:00Read BR Chapter and Take Notes in Binder

2:15EK 1001 Questions

3:301/3 BR Passages

5:00Go Home

6:00Eat Dinner

8:30Gym

I would have gotten a 45 if I didnt almost **** my pants during vr. I was on the toilet for 5 minutes lol.
