EDIT: This was supposed to be a thread about the first day of SN2. However as with all intelligent life, things evolve. This thread has now become a support page for people following the SN2 plan. You can think of it as Alcoholics Anonymous for people studying to take the MCAT using the SN2 plan.

EDIT July 1, 2014:
If you are interested in @mehc012's Anki Deck, DO NOT SEND A PM. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/7if6wgaif98rkoa/mehc012 SN2edCh4s.apkg
**A NOTE: @mehc012 and several others (myself included) want to tell you guys that studying from another person's deck will probably not be as beneficial to you as creating your own cards. Yes you can take advantage of @mehc012's generosity, but you won't get the same advantage. Study the material. Create cards as you go along. You will find it more helpful to your studying. **

EDIT July 22, 2014:
The following is @TBRBiosadist's official MCAT Verbal Reasoning Strategy:
@TBRBiosadist's strategy that got [him] from a 7 average to scoring 13-15 average..

Spend the bulk of your time reading. Up to 3 minutes per passage.
  • Read the first and last paragraph thoroughly to begin with. Understand what the authors main point will be because 90% of questions require nothing more than a general idea.
  • After this, read the entire passage slowly enough where you dont feel like you need to reread sentences for understanding.
Next is just answer questions, there is a few tricks here that work about 90% of the time
  • Unless the passage is asking you about a specific detail, dont look back. READ EVERY ANSWER THOROUGLY AND THEN Answer what makes sense from the general point of the passage. Its very easy to prove a wrong answer to be somewhat correct if you dig hard enough, dont. Answer what your gut says and move onto the next question, dont contemplate to much. With that being said...
  • Answer like you were dropped on the head as a child. Alot of times if Im arguing between two answers, there is the answer that is 100% correct, and one that is 90% correct. Be an idoit and choose the one that seems like it is correct. However.....
  • "Always" is a word to avoid. If an answer uses this word, or definites like it, it is something to avoid. I would say 80% of the time the wishy washy answer is more correct then the highly affirmative one. This leads to my final point....
  • 100% of the time you are not actually looking for the "right" answer in verbal, this isnt PS or BS where 1+1 almost always equals 2 (unless we are talking about the different sedimentation values for Ribosomes). In verbal you are looking for the answer that isnt wrong. Often times an answer will seem very "right" but one aspect of it is clearly wrong, as compared to an answer that isnt wrong, but doesnt seem as right as that answer, these are meant to fool you. Choose the answer that isnt wrong.
I understand that I few of these tips may be at odds with each other. Ultimately you must adjust slightly for each passage, but it comes down to one thing. Read thoroughly. Read every sentence in the passage. Read every question. Read every answer. Then the correct answer will be fairly obvious. This may seem like it takes longer, but it takes much less time than skimming, and then trying to find the correct information later.

Or to summarize in one sentence

Understand what the hell the author is arguing

EDIT July 26, 2014:

@DoctorInASaree uploaded a guide to Verbal Reasoning. If you're interested, it's worth a look. Here is the link: https://www.dropbox.com/s/2byivymmqwlvjms/MCAT VR Primer DRSAREE.pdf

Just finished the first day of SN2...man is it long and exhausting.

The first day is BR physics chapter (translational motion) + 1/3 of the passages. I felt like I wasn't able to apply the stuff I read into the stuff I was tested on.

Has anyone felt this way when following the schedule? It just seems like the contents of the chapter didn't really stick in my head when I took the practice passages. Will this improve over time?

EDIT 3, March 4, 2015:

For verbal, if you are feeling lost and confused, I highly highly recommend you to look into the MCAT Strategy Course by @Jack Westin. I've been working with him, and nothing comes close to his course and teaching. It's a strategy course, so it will cover everything, not just the VR/CARS section.

I have been doing all of the SN2ed schedule as well as I can. Then, I go along with the wikipremed video's afterwards to try to clear things up. Today I did day 4 for SN2ed while I watched the video's over proteins, carbohydrates, nucleic acids, and lipids.
Oh ok I got you. As much as I don't like the SN2 plan, I feel like it does somehow help even though I miss random questions. My content knowledge in PS is basically gone though so I need Wikipremed to reteach me everything

I'm quite satisfied with the amount of material covered in TBR as well as how concepts are being explained. Although, if I read through the chapter and I am unable to grasp a certain concept I will not hesitate to find a more suitable explanation elsewhere 🙂

Happy studying today everyone!

I am, too but I see stuff in passages that aren't entirely covered in the chapter or require some outside knowledge. My best is that they use passages as a way to also teach more stuff. I generally do better on the second 1/3

Dont stress out on the score it really means nothing, you are not a wizard to know the stuff they don't ask, but trust you form an intuition that will help on the real mcat when you see something you have not seen.
Tailor the program to your needs, focus on PS more in you reading I would recommend you stick with the passages of BR just try what connects to you when it comes to content review. Good luck

What do you guys find your most productive hours of studying to be? (ie. beginning at 6am until noon, etc.)

Do you make time to exercise? If so, when do you do it? I am used to working out first thing in the morning, but finding I am exhausted afterwards to begin studying within the 2hrs after my workout and need a nap!

8am->8pm. I exercise before I begin my day of studying. I just love studying for the MCAT!

I take a few breaks here and there...eating food is nice once in a while 😀

I've been procrastinating a lot recently because I've gotten used to long days in the library. I study from 9:30ish til about 6:30 with a 45 minute break for lunch around 1:45. My most productive hours are before lunch, and I go out for a run or do a quick workout after studying about 3 times a week.

The only days I'll really go out and drink are saturday nights, but I still get to see my friends during the week occasionally. I just have to end the night kinda earlier than I normally would.

Hey guys, I'm a little late to the conversation, but I'm on the SN2ed schedule as well. It's somewhat therapeutic to read through the responses and see you guys have had some of the same troubles as me.

I just wanted to chime in on the BR bio passages. I think they are probably good because how they are structured, but I don't worry too much if I don't score great. Some of the questions ask stuff that hasn't been reviewed yet. I think BR's explanation go into way too much detail though. I know in my research Mcat study material I've seen a ton of people hate on the TBR for bio because it goes too in depth and the questions focus too much on detail. I like to keep this in mind when I grade my passages.

As far as verbal goes, I think EK's book offer's a great strategy to approaching the passages and is worth checking out if you have the time.

Modified the SN2 schedule a bit guys

I'm gonna focus on PS so I'll double up on chem and physics. Then after I'm done with those books, I'll read bio and OChem. Then I'll do AAMC and the self assessment package.

first of sooo excited that I found this!! those long 10+ hour days were starting to get to me..

Anyway I agree with everything ..as far as the schedule being a bit tough at first but then you get the hang of it. Here are some things I have noticed though good and bad depending on how you look at it.

1. When I read a chapter for example gen chem or physics I will do the 1/3 and generally do really well. BUT is it because I just read a whole chapter on it?? Or is it because I know it.. My second 1/3 goes down a bit which is 🙁 because it means I need to keep reviewing things.. but my brain is so small #fml.

2. I have no friends anymore

3. I feel like practice is a bit low so I bought the TPRH and Kaplan online tools which have helped TREMENDOUSLY. I think doing passages from different review material really helps review concepts that you might not have looked at.

4. On my "break days" I go though the AAMC outline and pick random topics that I have covered in my review and google them just to read more about them. Background knowledge helps SO MUCH esp in those TBR bio passages that have killed me.

That's alll for now. oh and YES EXERCISE!! I am training for a marathon as well so hopefully I reach my target mile time AND MCAT score 🙂 good luck.

hey guys !!
study for an hour from 6:30 till 7:30 (verbal) then go to the hospital finish at 12 break for half an hour then start. this is actually my peek time although im used to study in the morning so i cant wait till the rotations are over. I stop for an hour of lunch break then study till 8 then swim and ride a bike 3 times a week.

2. I have no friends anymore

Really? I've made a really good friend - his name is Salty the Exam Kracker

Here he is saying hi!

Hahaha. I've realized that the 1/3's style doesn't work for me. I gonna sit down and take out the entire book in a week now and finish content review in a month according to my new plan. Hope SN2 works for you, it just wasn't for me

I am going to do the same. I am going to finish content review then just do strict passages. I hope it will be enough

Okay I know there is already a EK101 vs TPRH thread but I wanted some more opinions.. do you all see a discrepancy i your scores?? I just feel SUPER lost because some of the EK101 tests I do HORRIBLE IN some I do okay.. then in TPRH I do REALLY WELL. Does that mean that TPRH is just easier?? I thought it was like the Rosetta stone of all verbal practice.

not sure on vs TPRH since I haven't done those yet but I've missed about 1 more question in EK than I did in Berkeley review verbal

Definitely feel this way. I started May 28th as well, and I'm still a couple days behind. I'm taking a lot of time reviewing the content, but I have to make more of an effort to do more practice problems and reviewing answers I got wrong. Definitely takes me more than 6+ hours. Today, I have to catch up on physics ch. 3 :/ Good luck! When are you taking urs btw?

What day are you on?

I am gonna start on passages on Saturday and treat them like the MCAT in the sense that the information is not fresh in mind but I should be able to figure out the answer because I've done content review for the last 1.5 months. If I am deficient, I will do content review then passages from the same chapter mostly all at once but will save a couple BR ones for review days in July.

You mean review it all and then do passages? Or review one chapter at a time and do the ch 1 passages and etc? Cause the latter is what I'm following

What day are you on?

Hey juice31 🙂, officially on day 17. Still have to read orgo ch. 2 + 3 and do ch. 2 exam krackers 1001 problems along with the 2nd chapter 1/3 questions *sigh*. Working on it, though.

What day are you on, juice31? Have you been able to keep up?

Day 8. I had to restart after being 12 days in because I went on vacation right when school was over for two weeks. Now I am back on track. I am still struggling to concentrate really well. Hopefully I can get through the studying. (FINGERS CROSSED)

I feel the same way but opposite (I find TPRH verbal more difficult than EK101). Looking on the forums it seems that people may find that they do better in one book compared to the other. I'm alternating both to get more exposure!

I also wanted to chime in, I'm on the SN2ed schedule as well (Day 19)!

I ditched the schedule and totally changed around it's arrangement. I'm focusing hard on PS, then next month I'll do BS. I'm doing verbal the whole time though. If this works the way I'm going to make it, I'll make a new MCAT schedule and post it in a year or so

My MCAT is august 27!

Are you working your way through ALL of the passage questions?
Yeah; I'm following the BR book exactly as they suggest you do them. I wanna finish all the passages together because you're still learning by doing them and I want to learn as much of each chapter in a close time gap. I'll do this for the next month or so with all the books, leaving me a few weeks to focus solely on AAMC practice tests, random review, and last minute catchups.

LOL it's kinda ironic how I'm the guy that made this thread and then disavowed the sn2 plan

Anyone have tips for memorizing all the physics equations? That's one of my main problems with physics and it's so frustrating

1. Make an equation sheet and religiously study it every day
2. Make note cards and take them with you everywhere including the shower(I laminated mine)
3. Do EK1001 problems and you will probably start dreaming about equations.. no joke my 5th day all I could think about was free falling bodies and their equations

good luck i never liked physics but once you do enough passages the formulas come naturally 🙂

Same here, TexasSurgeon. Just wanted to let you know that there is an official august 27th mcat forum, if you're interested 🙂

No clue wtf to do with TBR physics. This stuff is CRAY CRAY. I have a feeling i need to do the EK 1001 problems to get a solid grasp of the content before I attempt the passages (which I am NOT doing great on either... just got a 3/7 for passage 1 on ch 3 for physics). Am considering going with Khan academy for physics review as TBR just isn't cutting it for me.

Bio and O-chem are my favs. Simply because I was a bio major (may need a little brushing up to do) and just finished retaking O-chem this last year as part of my postbacc. ArRGGHH need some advice right now peeps! driving myself crazy!

GREAT. this is what I mean. So I end up doing one of the passages about the Waterfall generator (which doesn't even touch on much calculation stuff) and I end up getting a 4/5. WTF?! LOL This is so random.

So just to ease your nerves the "review" passages are usually just to gauge your learning of the material and are a bit harder than the "real passages" HOWEVER if you are talking about the "real passages" the Hydroelectricity one? Than I highly recommend reviewing the material again like Khan or another prep book. Once you get the concepts down the problems will be easier. A lot of those passages need require a formula or a certain concept that's in the passage. Don't give up!!

I just got totally owned by their nervous system passages in the bio book. So instead of studying I am going to watch orange is the new black and start again tomorrow.🙂

Yeah. I am having trouble with the passages that test us on just the material from the passage (sort of content review for that passage)? But as for the "real passages" apart of the 52-question exam at the end of each TBR passage I am doing EHHH. For instance, I ended up getting around a 4/5 for passage 1, a 2/6 for passage 3, and a 5/6 for passage 7. It's like I can understand the passage, but I do not see where the actual concepts I learned come into play from the chapter. Jeez. All this girl wants is a 9-10 on physics. Thasit 🙁

This is why I abandoned SN2. I wanted to spend time solely on the physical sciences first and nail it all down before moving into BS. I was doing slightly better on the passages. So I suggest you scrap SN2 and sit down with just physics or just chem and knock it out one book a week if you can (I know the passages take a long time). You got this.

PS- You're a girl? Why hello there, I'm Harvey.

I kinda like switching from subject to subject though.. it helps keep me calm cause I feel more secure seeing things I can recall from my undergrad past. I was thinking of sorta half-assing O-chem review... apparently there isn't too much on the MCAT these days (hopefully there isn't by the time I take mine).

PS- LOL. 'SUP HARVEY.

Yeah I like that as well, but not across 4 subjects- I just feel like I forget stuff. I'm just reviewing PS books first and etc. I read somewhere that OChem is roughly 1 passage on BS so about 6-7 questions

lmao

Yes, I've heard about the same, and if it is on there it is not too hard to figure it out. I hope that's how it is! 🙂

Im going to say something bold.....the TBRbio questions aren't that bad. You just have to be really good at reading passages. I did terrible at first but now Im getting 80%+ on a regular basis and when I get lower, its usually just because I bombed one passage that I didn't really read through. Hell last night I did a set of 7 passages, 5 of them I didn't miss anything, I only missed one on the sixth, then missed 5 on the final one. And this is why I'm in love with TBR Bio now. It makes you have to excel at passage reads which is the bulk of the MCAT now. Alot of times we may focus two much on memorization when I continually hear the MCAT is hugely reading skill based.
