SN2ed I enrolled in a kaplan course for the MCATs this summer and I bought all the books necessary for your MCAT schedule. I thought that I could do both schedule's together, to really get my act together for the MCATs. However now I am realizing what a huge time commitment both schedules would require. As a result I came up with a way to use all this material to maximize my MCAT score. Do you think it will work?
So far I have spent
83 dollars on the EK 1001 and Verbal 101 books
1750 for Kaplan MCAT course (my dad was able to find a 250 dollar discount online)
240 for the B.R. books
** The Kaplan course provides all 19 of their exams and all the AAMC exams.
Now my kaplan class meets 2 days a week on Wednesdays and Sundays. For each class I am expected to do the following:
1. Read 3 chapters in advance of the next class from the kaplan books (kaplan bio/chem/orgo/physics). Kaplan usually covers 3-4 chapters in the kaplan books for each class in the SAME subject. In other words 1 kaplan class may cover the first 3 chapters of physics.
2. Do a foundation review test for the new class
3. Do three topical review tests for the material from the previous class
4. Do three subjects tests from the material from the previous class.
What I plan on doing is the following:
1. Read all the chapters that I am told to in the kaplan books.
2. Do all of their foundation review/topical review/subject tests
3. Do the passages in the BR books
4. Re-read all the chapters that I read that week, on the sixth day.
5. Go through all the verbal reading passages
6. Go through all the passages in the 1001 series
7. Spend some time each day doing my Kaplan flashcards
8. Go to my Kaplan class
The only thing that I won't be using your schedule for is reading the BR books. I will be using the kaplan books for that.
This is what a typical schedule for me will look like during the week:
Day 1 (monday): Read the first kaplan chapter that I am required to read for the next class ( Physics chapter 1). Do the 1/3 of the BR passages corresponding to the topics covered in the kaplan chapter. Do 3-4 passages of Verbal 101 book, like in your schedule.
Day 2 (tuesday): Read the second kaplan chapter that I am required to read for the next class (Physics chapter 2). Do the 1/3 of the BR passages corresponding to the topics covered in the kaplan chapter. Do the foundation review exercises for kaplan. Do the 3-4 passages in the verbal 101 book.
Day 3 (wednesday): Read the third kaplan chapter that I am required to read for the next class (Physics 3) and do the corresponding 1/3 of BR passages. Go to class for 3 hours. Do 1/3 of the passages in the verbal 101 book.
Day 4 (Thursday): Read the first kaplan chapter that I am supposed to read for my first class (Gen Chem 1). Do the corresponding 1/3 of BR passages. Do 3-4 verbal passages of the passages in the verbal 101 book.
Day 5 (Friday): Read the kaplan chapter that I am supposed to for the second class (Gen Chem 2). Do the corresponding 1/3 of BR passages. Do 3-4 verbal passages of the Verbal 101 passages. Do the foundation review exercises.
Day 6: (Saturday): Read through all the chapters that I read the previous week. Work through the corresponding ek 1001 passages.
Day 7: (Sunday) - Only read the kaplan chapter that I am supposed to, go to class, do 1/3 of the BR passages and do 3-4 verbal passages. Relax
I will also be reviewing my kaplan mcat flashcards for 30 minutes a day.
I know you think that I should have a break day built in but I am used to studying 6 hours a day outside of class during the school year. I study that much to keep my gpa at a 3.8 at the top 20 school that I go to. I am guessing that my current schedule will take 5-6 hours a day each day (except sunday) which I am prepared to do.
I know you think Diagnostics are worthless, but I took my kaplan diagnostic and got a pathetic 26. I want a 34-35 on the real MCATs, which is why I have to work really hard from here on out.
Also every week for 15 hours I am doing research at a medical school. I was going to spend my entire summer on the MCATs, but my pre-med advisors told me that I JUST can't do MCATs the entire summer, I have to focus on other activities during the summer because medical schools will look at what I do over the summer.
***** I also don't understand this part of your schedule from your post:
^^ does this mean that we do 1/3 of the passages corresponding to the material we covered in the review books? When do we do the other 2/3 of those passages?

Additionally, work through corresponding EK 1001 sections for the chapters you worked through last week (Day 1-5). For instance, BR O-Chem chapter #1 goes over Organic Structure & Bonding; hence, complete the Molecular Structure in the EK 1001 O-Chem. The topics probably won't match all the time, but go with the best fit. Also, only do every third problem/passage in the EK 1001s.
