Rotations began yesterday.

And while all is well and good, I've found myself a little tired probably from so much standing, or perhaps my glucagon was an epic failure today. Yes, I did eat a big lunch. Every hour or so today, I was craving 70,000cc of snacks.

Any recommendations of what I can fit in my white coat pocket to satisfy my pregnancy-type appetite? Bar form is best, but I hate granola. And I think I am done with Nutrigrain bars, because I think the aftershock may have offended some of my patients this afternoon.

Thx in adv.

Balance Bars. 30% protein. I'm on my surgery rotation and on days I don't get a chance to eat breakfast, I'll grab one of these and I'm good for standing in surgery for 4-5 hours without getting hungry. They aren't the greatest tasting thing ever, but they're good enough and get the job done.

powerbars. Very light and compact. 250 calories = good to go.

Bring a few.

I'll echo Clif bars as a good snack. Often ate these thru undergrad when I couldn't grab lunch. They're extremely delicious compared to other bars that promote the same use. They don't look appetizing, but don't let that fool you.

oh yeah for sure, they look awful but taste pretty darn good. i find myself pulling off chunks and wading it up into cookie dough shaped/sized balls

Avoid things that can melt or get crushed. Keep some new, clean zip lock bags in your white coat pocket. You'll never know when you'll be around free food that you can't eat (but you might be able to stuff a cookie into that bag and run along).

I put a couple of Fiber One bars in my coat along with one prepackaged little bag of baby carrots or sliced apples I bought from Costco. Works well!

Powerbars! Brings me back to my high school and college competition days. Thanks for reminding me.

In the local grocery store today, I was expecting maybe 1 shelf of Powerbars and instead saw nearly an entire aisle of health-food bars. And when the hell did powerbars and energy bars become so metrosexual? Listing every vitamin's fancy name on the front label? Strawberry shortcake flavor? A chocolate brownie with flax seed, 34 grams of protein, and a full-day supply of Vitamin C? Ewwwwwww.

I'll stick with the boring plain old powerbars, also on sale, thanks.

I usually had cliff bars (chocolate mint...mmmm) or balance bars (cookie dough) on me during my surgery rotations in case I didn't get a chance to grab lunch, and I could get a few bites in between cases.

For lighter snacks, I typically have fruit leathers -- Target has some good ones, and so does Trader Joe's, or Special K bars, or Quaker chocolate chip granola bars depending on my mood. Most recently, I've stuck with fruit leathers and had other options in my back pack.

Protein bars are perfect. Just make sure they are high protein so you won't be hungry again in 30 minutes. 👍

Not bar form, but quick, easy, healthy and can be portioned out over the entire day whenever you feel the need to pop something in your mouth. Fill up a snack sized ziploc bag with raw nuts (almonds are a good choice) - unsalted. Worked for me in my 1st trimester when I was on peds.

My hospital's cafeteria sells these little packages of three homemade cookies. They're the perfect size to fit in your white coat pocket... it's almost like they're made with that purpose in mind. Today was brown chocolate chip cookies... delicious (and I'm not normally a sweets person).

Special K makes a nice low cal bar and pretty tasty too.

I eat these General Mills Cereal Bars:

They taste good and are filling.

I like putting concha sweet breads in my labcoat. My hospital cafeteria serves the best conchas, the best. If you are of the poor souls that doesn't know what a concha is, the image below is what they are supposed to look like:

The conchas they give us come in a plastic wrapper so there's no guilt in stuffing my labcoat with one or two of 'em. Lately my labcoat has this mexican candy made with cajeta that I think has expired a few months ago and I never got to eating it. Hrm.. I'll eat it today.

If your cafeteria ones are anything like the ones I had growing up, they'd break apart really easily and they're bulky. Bar type things would be better suited for a white coat.

But I LOVE concha, and I buy it any time I can find it.

Loving the Powerbars, except for today when it sat in my pocket until late afternoon, enduring hours and hours of moving around in my white coat pocket. When I went to eat it, it looked like 50 people with severe Metabolic Syndrome had sat on it for about 20 years.

i've been enjoying my morning poptart everyday. it's perfectly pocket-sized.

Agreed. The Fiber One bars are delicious, even though their packaging makes you feel like you're an incontinent 80 year old when you eat them.

Betty Lou's High Protein Balls Almond Butter

I tend to get a little hypoglycemic at times, and these are one of the best things I've found to prevent it. 12 g of whey protein, not too sweet, and tasty if you like almonds. Most protein bars are way too sweet for my taste.
dude, thank you for this. I got them in the mail today, these get 2 thumbs up from me

Glad you're enjoying 'em. I recently discovered the same company also makes a low-glycemic shake that's pretty good. You just mix it with water and it tastes like chocolate cake batter but has 0 grams of sugar (sweetened with stevia) and has 20 grams of protein per envelope. Kind of spendy, but worth it IMO.

I keep one in my pocket and just mix it in a water bottle if I can't break away for a proper bite to eat...which seems to be a daily occurrence in the ER. Somebody walked in with an ear needing to be put back together at the end of my 12 hour shift today and I was glad to have something to throw in my belly before starting the repair. My hands are much steadier with a nice stable blood sugar.

I seriously saw an MSIV pull this out last year... Nothing says gross like a 5 hour asswarmed package of 67 cent Buddig

I am going to sound like a total tree hugger but I'd recommend getting some salted roasted soy nuts and sticking them in ziploc bag.

They take a little while to get used to but once you do they taste pretty darn good. For some reason they do a much, much better job at killing my hunger than any of the bars ever could. While Fiber-one bars aren't bad, during the longer rotations, when you dont have time to eat and you are there from morning till after dinner, a single bar just doesn't do the trick. A baggie full of soy nuts does.
