  1. Pharmacist
And the tech told me the pharmacist is on his lunch break so it will be 20-25 minutes until he can check my prescription

The pharmacy is open from 9 to 6 and has only one pharmacist on staff. Not sure why the techs can stay, maybe he's sitting in a spot I can't see.

Is this the new thing?? It's great! I'm happy to wait while the guy has a sandwich.

It's probably not new, in certain states such as California, even if there is no overlap, the pharmacist has to take a 30 minute lunch, and new rx's can't be sold if there is no pharmacist present, so...

In NY they started pushing lunch breaks because pharmacists starting making noise that they weren't getting breaks. According to CVS, pharmacists are allowed to take up to a half hour break on all shifts. If there is only one pharmacist on duty, the pharmacist is to stay in the pharmacy and eat, but must be available in case of emergency. Technicians are allowed to tell customers that the pharmacist is on lunch and will return in however many minutes, and ask if they'd like to leave a message and the pharmacist will call them back later.

In CA, pharmacist can take up to a 30 minute lunch and remain open without the pharmacist presence in the pharmacy while having ancillary staff (e.g pharmacy technician/intern/cashier) doing non-discretionary tasks (i.e. no counseling, no new medication that requires counseling, or anything that requires the pharmacist supervision)

This isn't California - it's Ohio.

Oh hey Ohio, hows it going over there? Did you get your med yet?

Regardless of what state you're in, these are clearly similar policies and chances are Ohio follows something similar. I'm as happy are you that the Pharmacists are finally getting breaks, makes the day go by easier.

Our state board here is very .... different. They definitely don’t care about pharmacist working conditions.

I'm in Ohio and I don't ever get a break. I'd be in a lot of trouble if I took 30 min to myself and didn't wait on customers which would lead to bad surveys. On top of that we have escrpts coming in all the time which wouldn't be verified on time which would lower my scores which would put my DL on my back.

I think all pharmacies should be closed for lunch, especially, if there's only one pharmacist on duty. Doctors offices are do it. Why shouldn't they we?
I agree with you. It seems from my experience that only Walmarts and Supermarkets close for lunch. I personally feel it would give enough of a reboot to keep the pharmacist at peak performance. I don't feel like I'm recharged when I shove a sandwich in my mouth in 3 minutes. That being said, in my current job I make sure I sit down, relax and eat. I give my self 15 minutes per meal. If a consultation is needed I still come up and talk to the patient, but otherwise my staff knows to leave non-urgent issues to the side until I'm back.
